HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC 325

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC 325 was this past weekend and featured some exciting fights and
finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC 325
GOOD- Quillan Salkilld submits Jamie Mullarkey
Salkilld lands some early kicks before getting a takedown. Mullarkey
is right back up, though. Salkilld lands a few more strikes and tries
for another takedown but Mullarkey stops and gets his own takedown.
Salkilld is right back up and tries for another takedown of his own.
He eventually gets the takedown and grabs a rear-naked choke but it’s
on the chin. No matter, he opts for the neck crank and bears down,
forcing Mullarkey to tap out just over three minutes into the first round.
Salkilld improves to 11-1 and has won 11 straight fights while Mullarkey drops to 18-9. Good win for Salkilld.

BAD- Tai Tuivasa vs. Tallison Teixeira
Teixeira gets a quick takedown and starts dropping punches and elbows.
They’re up and down and Teixeira gets into mount and starts dropping
elbows. The fight slows down and continues this way until the first round ends. The second round begins with both men connecting with some
slow heavy strikes as they both look for open opportunities. Teixeira
gets a takedown and spends the rest of the second round working some
ground-and-pound. The third round starts with the exhausted fighters
trying to engage but not much is happening. This dreadful fight goes
the distance so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Teixeira wins the decision to improve to 9-1 while Tuivasa drops to
14-9 and has lost 6 straight fights. It’s a win for Teixeira.

GOOD- Mauricio Ruffy stops Rafael Fiziev
They start off trading kicks with each other before Fiziev lands a few
punches. Fiziev keeps attacking with kicks while Ruffy nearly connects
a few times with fight-ending strikes. The tense first round ends. The
second round begins with both men throwing strikes from all angles.
Fiziev is attacking the body until Ruffy nails him in the face with a
powerful right hand that staggers him. Ruffy is tentative, not wanting
to make a mistake, and choosing his spots carefully until he’s pounded
Fiziev so much that he’s done and the referee jumps in to stop the fight four and a half minutes into the second round.
Ruffy improves to 13-2 while Fiziev drops to 13-5. Good win for Ruffy.

GOOD- Benoit Saint-Denis stops Dan Hooker
They trade kicks early as Saint-Denis relentlessly tries for a takedown. Hooker continues landing heavy kicks. They trip each other
to the mat but are right back up. Saint-Denis gets a takedown and
lands some elbows but Hooker fights back to his feet. They trade
wildly until the first round ends. The second round begins with
Saint-Denis pursuing another takedown. He completes it and is laying
in the hard elbows. Saint-Denis is pouring it on, cutting up Hooker
and annihilating him until the referee jumps in to stop the fight shortly before the second round ends.
Saint-Denis improves to 17-3 with 1 No Contest and has won 4 straight
fights while Hooker drops to 24-14. Good win for Saint-Denis.

GOOD- Alexander Volkanovski vs. Diego Lopes
Volkanovski was looking to defend his UFC Featherweight Championship
for the sixth time across both of his title reigns.
They’re trading some quick kicks early for the first few minutes. They
trade some nice strikes just before the first round ends. The second
round begins with more kicks being traded. Things start heating up,
with both men landing some heavy strikes, but the close second round ends. The third round starts with more heavy strikes being traded.
Volkanovski is opening up and landing some big shots. Lopes is giving
it back, also. It seems like the fight could end at any moment but
both men are also showing good toughness.
The fourth round opens with more of the same. Volkanovski’s volume is
the difference, as they’re both landing heavy strikes. They continue
cracking each other until the fourth round ends. The fifth round commences with Volkanovski continuing to work his jab and they keep
trading. They’re also up and down a few times before the fight ends.
We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Volkanovski wins the decision to improve to 28-4 while Lopes drops to 27-8. Good win for Volkanovski.

My new epic fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: The End’s
Beginning
. The exciting epic fantasy series Kingdom of Zarias returns with the 4th book in the series. After the harrowing events of
Book 3 the residents of the Kingdom of Zarias continue on their paths.
Serena Summers continues to learn and grow as a fighter, desperately
seeking to become stronger before she loses anyone else in her life.
Daniel Summers discovers new parts of the world that open his eyes to
just how little he truly knows. A new hero, Lamar Abeers, arrives to
join the fight against evil. Plus, Zach Summers, Tiana Highsmith, and
Xavien Ekens continue their journeys with their friends, and a new
ruler of Vhaharen is crowned. The world has found a little peace.
However, that peace is only temporary. In a shocking act of violence,
the monstrous villain Galren strikes from the shadows and changes the
world forever. This is Book 4 in the series. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop
game in novel form. It’s on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other
places. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Thank you very much, have a good day.
