HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Yan vs. Figueiredo

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Yan vs. Figueiredo was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to
the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Yan vs. Figueiredo
GOOD- Zhang Mingyang stops Ozzy Diaz
Zhang starts off with kicks while Diaz tries some punches. Zhang smashes Diaz with an elbow that drops him then swarms him with punches
that force the referee to jump in to stop the fight almost halfway through the first round.
Zhang improves to 18-6 and has won 11 straight fights while Diaz drops
to 9-3. All 18 of Zhang’s wins have come in the first round by
stoppage. That’s impressive. Good win for Zhang.

GOOD- Carlos Ulberg vs. Volkan Oezdemir
They start off exchanging strikes until Oezdemir lands some powerful
left hooks that hurt Ulberg. However, Ulberg lands some damaging
strikes of his own. Both men are showing good toughness, as these
strong strikes are coming from multiple angles and connecting with force. This continues throughout the first round. The second round
begins with more of the same, as both fighters are throwing and
landing huge bombs that could end the fight at any moment. The toughness on display here is wild. It seems as though Ulberg is
landing a bit more accurately but I’m not sure. Oezdemir’s face seems
to be showing more damage as the second round ends. The third round
starts with Oezdemir continuing to come forward and he hurts Ulberg with some punches. Ulberg fires back with a big right hook that
staggers Oezdemir and they continue to brawl. Oezdemir gets denied on
a few takedown attempts and somehow this fight goes the distance
despite so many of these strikes looking like they could end any other fight. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Ulberg wins the decision to improve to 11-1 and has won 7 straight
fights while Oezdemir drops to 20-8. Good win for Ulberg.

GOOD- Gabriella Fernandes submits Wang Cong
They start off striking, with Wang connecting with some powerful
strikes. Wang is striking from all angles but Fernandes is firing back with attacks of her own, just not as often, as she searches for a takedown. The first round ends with a striking exchange. The second
round begins with more diverse striking from Wang. Fernandes connects
with a punishing head kick that drops Wang. Fernandes follows up with
hooks and takes Wang’s back. Fernandes wraps up a tight rear-naked
choke and this fight is over not quite four minutes into the second round.
Fernandes improves to 10-3 while Wang drops to 6-1 and is given her
first loss after 6 straight wins to start her career. Big win for
Fernandes after being a huge underdog in this fight.

GOOD- Muslim Salikhov stops Song Kenan
They’re trading kicks early before mixing in some punches. Salikhov
continues landing leg kicks until he connects with a spinning wheel
kick that lands flush on Song’s chin and pretty much ends the fight. A follow-up hammerfist lands before the referee can intervene to stop the fight not quite four minutes into the first round. Salikhov has
finished a fight with a spinning kick twice in the UFC and an
additional four times in his career before that. Wow.
Salikhov improves to 21-5 while Song drops to 22-9. Good win for Salikhov.

GOOD- Yan Xiaonan vs. Tabatha Ricci
Yan connects with some strikes before Ricci tries for a takedown that she can’t complete. Yan continues popping an extremely passive Ricci
until the first round ends. The second round begins with Ricci
connecting with a strike before getting stunned by a Yan right hand.
Ricci gets a takedown but Yan is right back to her feet. Yan continues
landing strikes whenever she wants as Ricci is having trouble with her
accuracy and the second round ends. The third round starts with more of the same, Yan landing at will while Ricci struggles to connect with her own strikes. The fight ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Yan wins the decision to improve to 19-4 with 1 No Contest while Ricci
drops to 11-3. Good win for Yan.

GOOD- Petr Yan vs. Deiveson Figueiredo
They have a quick striking exchange before Figueiredo gets a trip takedown. They’re grappling and squirming around with great speed as
Yan tries to get up. Yan reverses to get on top and works a little
ground-and-pound before Figueiredo gets up before the first round ends. The second round begins with some striking exchanges until Yan
is warned for outstretched fingers. They go back to striking and
Figueiredo hurts Yan with some powerful right hands. Yan is landing
more strikes but he gets warned again for outstretched fingers. Take a
point, ref. The second round ends with Yan connecting with some good strikes. The third round starts with more striking exchanges, with Yan
getting the better of them with his activity. Yan drops Figueiredo
with an uppercut but they quickly go back to striking. Yan again is getting the better of things and the damage is piling up as the third
round ends.
The fourth round opens with Yan getting a trip takedown but Figueiredo
is immediately back up. Yan is dominating on the feet but Figueiredo
is fighting back. It just doesn’t seem like enough, as Yan continues
landing at will. As I write that, Figueiredo hurts Yan with a big
right hand and follows up with strikes to the body. Yan fires back with uppercuts and the fourth round ends. The fifth round begins with
more of the same as Yan continues to outpace his opponent with his
striking and movement. Figueiredo wants to brawl but Yan declines and
keeps fighting his way until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Yan wins the decision to improve to 18-5 while Figueiredo drops to 24-4-1 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Yan.
