Liddell vs. Ortiz 3: We all lose
Don’t get it twisted. I am all for fighters making the absolute most money possible. I was ecstatic when I read the report that Tito Ortiz was going to make 200k and Chuck Liddell 250k for Saturday’s debacle. While I did not buy the pay per view, I did feel a little guilty. I just could not get behind this at all. Let’s start with the promoter: Oscar De La Hoya who spent the pre-fight hype press conference talking about how cold the building was, couldn’t remember anyone on his undercard and in general looked overwhelmed. Maybe De La Hoya becomes the greatest fight promoter of all time, I have no idea, but this effort was absolutely embarrassing.
Nothing could be more embarrassing than what took place in the cage. Ortiz is really best known lately for his weak command of the English language and his nonsensical interviews. Not to mention, he lost twice to Liddell ( or is it Lydell?) in his prime. I just never saw the point in this fight. Liddell on the other hand is super charismatic, with the mohawk and head tattoo, Chuck was a taylor made champion and bonafide superstar in his prime. Injuries and the wars in the octagon catch up to everyone though, and Liddell is 48 years old! He lost his last four fights years ago by knockout and his chin steadily declined late in his career. Liddell was in so many wars I saw no other outcome other than what happened last night. Tito knocked Liddell out quick, Liddell looked literally molasses slow. It almost reminded me of the time my two drunk uncles fought at a cookout, one who was once a tough street fighter in his day, was now kinda flabby and slow. The other a little younger and quicker took him out quick. And we all thought it was pathetic.
It’s time for Liddell to go away now. He’s an all time legend, that will never be taken away. If anyone watches this and sanctions him another fight, they literally should be arrested. If he actually fights someone who’s young and has skill, they could be sanctioning a murder. Chuck your an all time hero man, you can live off that for 10 lifetimes. As for Ortiz , who’s 43 .He was never a big enough star in his prime, never mind now to warrant another run say in the UFC? Forget it. I’m sure he will fight again, and will be treated to some more awkward sound bites and little pay per views sold and seats unfilled. This isn’t a Ortiz hit piece it just is what it is for him at this point.

I’m not sure obviously how the event did on pay per view . I’m sure the numbers were extremely low, I would guess maybe 150,000 buys? 7,389 people bought tickets and showed up, God love them. The undercard was exciting, and I’m happy for the fighters. The main event was sad, and a black eye on all MMA . We don’t need Tito Ortiz or Chuck Liddell anymore. We have a full slate of amazing fights for the rest of 2018 and early 2019. It’s well over for Chuck and Tito, and just starting for Golden Boy promotions, I’m interested to see how it plays out.
