Even putting the UFC 229 post-fight brawl aside, Khabib Nurmagomedov has kept himself in the headlines. Since submitting Conor McGregor in the fourth round, Nurmagomedov has threatened to quit the promotion. He has also proposed to box Floyd Mayweather. Needless to say, Nurmagomedov’s unique new infamy puts him in the driver’s seat regarding his fighting future.
Khabib’s uncle, Alex Nurmagomedov shared some tidbits with a Russian website regarding what Khabib may have in store coming up. Apparently, Khabib also turned down $15 million for a McGregor rematch.
“From the start, they offered him 15 million if he agrees,” Uncle Alex said to Sport Express (translated by MMA Junkie). “But Khabib said no. Let Conor stand in line, let him fight with others. Khabib wants to fight (Tony) Ferguson, and then finish his career.”
Nurmagomedov against Tony Ferguson is a fight UFC has tried to make several times in the past, only for it to fall through due to injuries or weight cutting issues. Finally fighting Ferguson and then walking away from the sport would be a noble venture, but would leave significant money on the table – particularly if the $15 million offer is true.
Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White is putting to rest any rumors that there is any conflict between UFC and Nurmagomedov. Speaking to TMZ this week, White said that after a rough few days post UFC 229, relations with Nurmagomedov are doing fine.
“We’re good. We’re good with Khabib,” White told TMZ. “That was a week ago. That was a week ago. A lot happens in a week in this business.”
A lot does happen in this business. A week ago, Nurmagomedov was going to quit the promotion and box Floyd Mayweather. This week, he’s retiring next year after fighting Tony Ferguson. One thing for sure, is next week, Nurmagomedov has a date with the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding the UFC 229 brawl. From there we may gain some clarity on a timeline for what’s next for Khabib.
