UFC 221 will be headlined by a middleweight clash between Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold. The fight was originally set to be an interim middleweight title fight, however, Romero failed to reach the 185 lb weight limit.
If Rockhold wins, he will be crowned interim champion; Romero will not be eligible to obtain the title in victory.
Originally the card was scheduled to be a middleweight title fight between undisputed champion Robert Whittaker and Rockhold. However, Whittaker was forced to withdraw due to injury in January.
On the under card, veteran heavyweight Mark Hunt will face Curtis Blaydes. This will be the first time Hunt will compete in the UFC since being pulled from a UFC Fight Night 121 in November of 2017, due to comments Hunt made regarding possible indications of severe brain trauma. Hunt is still engaged in a lawsuit against the UFC, as a result of Hunt’s UFC 200 opponent Brock Lesnar failing two drug tests prior to their fight.
