Joseph Benavidez defeated Henry Cejudo via split decision in closely contested bout.
When asked about the prospect of a third title shot against Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson, Benavidez said it was the only fight he’d take. “That’s the only fight I want,” he said. “I have six wins in a row. There is no other fight that I want.”
Unfazed by critics and detractors who think the result would be the same, Benavidez feels he and Johnson will continue to put on entertaining fights for fans. “People say I lost twice,” he said. “But me and Demetrious could fight a million times and there’s going to be a million awesome competitions between two world class fighters.”
Benavidez improved to 25-4 and is currently ranked 2nd in the UFC Flyweight Division.
Cervantes Analysis: Super close fight and definitely competitive throughout. Benavidez has definitely done enough to warrant a third shot, but I don’t think there’s much demand for it as he’s already lost twice to Johnson. He’s in a tough place right now and he may be a gatekeeper unless Johnson loses or expresses interest in a third fight with Benavidez. Until then, Benavidez may want to stay open-minded about taking other fights.
