Stephen Thompson fought an amazing fight against Tyron Woodley at UFC 205 on Saturday night. He failed to win the Welterweight Championship by the narrowist of margins – a majority draw.
He spoke about his opinion on the judges’ decision and how he felt about the result. “It was better than what they had at the beginning,” he said. “They came back an said it was a draw. I take it. I mean it’s not a win, obviously, so it’s still definitely disappointing.”
Thompson also admitted that he had trouble getting started and was a little reluctant to engage early on. “I was a little hesitant in this fight,” he said. “I knew he likes to explode in and throw that big right hand. I knew how strong he was in the clinch position, which led me to be a little more hesitant to close the gap and I shouldn’t have done that. I should’ve gone out there and let it all out.”
He also said he would be happy to fight Woodley again in an immediate rematch. “Oh yes, I think the fans would be really excited and entertained so I definitely wanna do that again.”
Dana White has since confirmed that he’s working to book Thompson vs. Woodley in an immediate rematch.
Cervantes Analysis: Thompson is as tough as they come. He was badly hurt numerous times in the fight and in trouble when Woodley locked on that guillotine, but he somehow managed to keep calm and survive the onslaughts. I scored the fight for Woodley, but wasn’t unhappy that they ruled it a draw. The immediate rematch was definitely the fight to make and I’m excited to see the two go at it again
