Garcia vs. Onama
By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist
UFC Fight Night: Garcia vs. Onama was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to
the rundown.
UFC Fight Night: Garcia vs. Onama
GOOD- Allen Nascimento submits Cody Durden
Durden came in on short notice to take this fight at 130 lb.
catchweight. They start off trading strikes right away, with
Nascimento landing some nice leg kicks. Durden is unswayed, though,
and he continues to come forward with punches. Nascimento counters
with kicks so Durden tries for a few takedowns but a close first round
ends. The second round begins with Durden firing aggressively as he
pushes forward. Again, Nascimento counters with leg kicks. The
firefight continues as both men are on the attack. Durden shoots in
but Nascimento is ready and locks in a tight Anaconda Choke that
forces the tap a bit over three minutes into the second round.
Nascimento improves to 22-6 and has won 4 straight fights while Durden
drops to 17-9-1. Strong win for Nascimento.
GOOD- Charles Radtke submits Daniel Frunza
They start off trading kicks until Radtke gets a takedown. Radtke
slowly works his ground-and-pound until the first round ends. The
second round begins with Frunza landing some nice strikes to the body
but Radtke again takes him down. Radtke gets to work with his
ground-and-pounding, including a nasty elbow. Frunza hooks his toes in
the fence and the referee tells him to stop but he doesn’t listen. I
hope he doesn’t get a hard warning or else he’ll really stop… Radtke
slashes at Frunza with repeated elbows that cut him up, as well as
various other strikes. The third round starts with Radtke getting an
immediate takedown and going to work with his ground-and-pound that
opens up a chance for him to lock on a tight rear-naked choke that
forces the tap four and a half minutes into the third round.
Radtke improves to 11-5 while Frunza drops to 9-4. Good win for Radtke.
GOOD- Yadier Del Valle submits Isaac Dulgarian
They start off throwing kicks at each other until Dulgarian tries for
a takedown but Del Valle stops it and begins landing a bunch of short
strikes. Del Valle locks in a rear-naked choke but Dulgarian only
throws punches and doesn’t try to escape and eventually has to tap out
a bit over three and a half minutes into the first round. That was odd.
Del Valle improves to a perfect 10-0 while Dulgarian drops to 7-2.
Good win for Del Valle.
GOOD- Jeremiah Wells vs. Themba Gorimbo
They start off slowly until Gorimbo gets a takedown. Wells is quickly
back up but Gorimbo takes him back down so Wells grabs the fence a few
times and gets admonished. Wells again gets back up but thrown back to
the mat. Wells grabs the cage again but Gorimbo throws him back down.
Wells gets back to his feet and now grabs the cage to put his weight
all over Gorimbo. The referee just continues to loudly yell at him
instead of taking a point or three. This is ridiculous. The second
round begins with both fighters trading kicks until Gorimbo tries for
a takedown. They’re grappling and reversing each other until Wells
gets the takedown and starts pounding away. Wells is hunting
submissions but Gorimbo is fighting him off until the second round
ends. The third round starts with both men trading strikes until
Gorimbo shoots in for a takedown but Wells fights him off with a guillotine attempt. They scramble until Wells gets a takedown and
starts smothering Gorimbo, who puts his own toes in the fence to try
to get a better position. At this point, why not? Why do they even
bother having rules? The refereeing seems to be getting worse. Anyway,
the fight ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Wells wins the decision to improve to 13-4-1 while Gorimbo drops to 14-6. Good win for Wells.
GOOD- Waldo Cortes-Acosta stops Ante Delija
Both fighters are doing the Palpatine right away. *sigh* They trade a
few heavy strikes before clinching against the fence. Both fighters
are slinging strikes but neither is grabbing the fence to get the real
advantage. As I type that, Delija pokes Cortes-Acosta in the eye. Holy
hell. The fight is stopped but then it’s not and this whole thing is an outhouse. The fight is waved off but then it’s not and this is a
total cluster. Delija is warned for the eyepoke and that’s it. What the hell? The only appropriate response to this nonsense involves a bunch of swear words. I’ll let you fill them in. This is absolutely ridiculous how bad the refereeing has been tonight. The fight restarts
and Cortes-Acosta smashes Delija with an overhand right that drops
him. A few strikes on the ground finishes him and the referee jumps in
to stop the fight nearly four minutes into the first round.
Cortes-Acosta is hurting and can’t really celebrate his victory.
Delija is a training partner of UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall
(15-3, 1 NC) and just days ago had criticized Ciryl Gane (13-2, 1 NC)
for his eyepokes at UFC 321. You can’t make this stuff up.
Cortes-Acosta improves to 15-2 while Delija drops to 26-7. Good win
for Cortes- Acosta.
GOOD- Steve Garcia stops David Onama
Garcis comes out firing away. Onama has no answers as Garcia comes at
him from all angles. Onama is being overwhelmed here, though he does
manage to cut Garcia on the eyebrow with a return strike. It’s not
enough, though, and Garcia drops him with a liver kick and pounds him
out just over three and a half minutes into the first round. That was
a dominating performance.
Garcia improves to 19-5 and has won 7 straight fights while Onama
drops to 14-3 and has his 4 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Garcia.
Here’s hoping that something is done about all of the breaking of these rules. The UFC has to do something, this is absurd.
My new epic fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: The End’s
Beginning. The exciting epic fantasy series Kingdom of Zarias
returns with the 4th book in the series. After the harrowing events of
Book 3 the residents of the Kingdom of Zarias continue on their paths.

just how little he truly knows. A new hero, Lamar Abeers, arrives to
join the fight against evil. Plus, Zach Summers, Tiana Highsmith, and
Xavien Ekens continue their journeys with their friends, and a new
ruler of Vhaharen is crowned. The world has found a little peace.
However, that peace is only temporary. In a shocking act of violence,
the monstrous villain Galren strikes from the shadows and changes the
