HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Oliveira vs. Gamrot

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Oliveira vs. Gamrot was last week and featured some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Oliveira vs. Gamrot
GOOD- Kaan Ofli submits Ricardo Ramos
Ofli gets a quick takedown and goes to work and the fighters grapple
on the mat. Ofli is hunting for submissions and finally locks in a
rear-naked choke that forces the tap just over three minutes into the first round. Ofli grabbed the fence multiple times there because he
knew the referee wouldn’t do anything about it.
Ofli improves to 12-4-1 while Ramos drops to 17-8. Good win for Ofli.

GOOD- Mario Pinto stops Jhonata Diniz
Tentative start, with not much happening until they exchange leg kicks
and Pinto gets a takedown. Diniz is right back up, though. Pinto hits a mat return and elbows are flying and smashing into their intended
targets. Pinto nearly wins with a keylock but Diniz survives until the
first round ends. The second round begins with Pinto getting another
early takedown, where he begins slashing down with dangerous elbows
that cut Diniz. Pinto moves into full mount and starts punching the
hell out of Diniz until the referee jumps in to stop the fight a bit over four minutes into the second round.
Pinto improves to a perfect 11-0 while Diniz drops to 9-2 and suddenly
Brazilian fighters have lost three straight fights and the fans here in Rio aren’t happy. Good win for Pinto.

GOOD/UGLY- Vicente Luque vs. Joel Alvarez
They’re trading single strikes early until Alvarez catches Luque in the eye with his thumb knuckle. The referee calls time for an eyepoke
but replay shows the strike was legal. The referee then calls off the
fight to award Alvarez the TKO win but then reverses himself and gives
Luque time to recover. Huh? What the hell’s going on here? They resume
fighting and trade strikes until the end of the first round. The second round begins with Alvarez firing away until Luque tries for a
takedown but gets shoved down. Alvarez climbs on top and begins
hunting for submissions while also nailing Luque with some nasty ground-and-pound until the second round ends. Luque seems to be having
major problems with his right eye, the one that got damaged in the
first round and should have stopped the fight and has been a big target ever since. However, the fight continues. This is terrible officiating. The third round starts with some circling around, as
Alvarez avoids attacks from Luque and fires back some tepid offence,
seemingly not wanting to hurt or injure Luque. Disgusting that the
opposing fighter is showing more sense about this then the cageside doctor, referee, and Luque’s own team. Anyway, they go to the ground
for a while and Alvarez coasts to victory. We go to the judges for the
official verdict, though. There needs to be some disciplinary action
coming out of this.
Alvarez wins the decision to improve to 23-3 and has won 4 straight fights while Luque drops to 23-12-1. Good win for Alvarez.

GOOD- Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Montel Jackson
They’re trading strikes early, until Figueiredo gets a takedown.
Jackson gets back up after some grappling. They trade powerful strikes
until the first round ends. The second round begins with an immediate
Figueiredo takedown, where he starts hunting submissions. Jackson
powers to his feet and they spend most of the rest of the second round
feinting at each other until the final few seconds, where they launch
bombs at each other. The third round starts with more short striking exchanges. Jackson has some success with body kicks so Figueiredo
clinches. Jackson throws Figueiredo down but he’s right back up immediately and the fight ends. Brazilian fighters had lost four
fights in a row and it seems like one will finally win again here but the crowd doesn’t seem to care. We go to the judges to render the official verdict.
Figueiredo wins the Split Decision to improve to 25-5-1 while Jackson
drops to 15-3 and has his 6 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Figueiredo.

GOOD- Charles Oliveira submits Mateusz Gamrot
Gamrot is stepping in on short notice to face the always dangerous
Oliveira. They start off trading strikes until Gamrot gets a takedown.
Oliveira hunts for submissions while Gamrot defends. Oliveira is in
full control as the crowd roars their approval but the first round ends before Oliveira can lock in a submission. The second round begins
with both fighters swinging for the fences as they throw bombs at each
other. Oliveira gets Gamrot down and starts hunting for submissions again. This time, he has his arm wrapped around Gamrot’s mouth in a
face crank and he squeezes until Gamrot has to tap not quite three
minutes into the second round. The crowd is going nuts as Oliveira celebrates. Oliviera furthers his records for most submissions and finishes in UFC history.
Oliveira improves to 36-11 with 1 No Contest while Gamrot drops to 25-4 with 1 No Contest. Strong win for Oliveira.
