HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Morales

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Morales was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and an exciting finish. Who won and who lost?
Let’s get to the rundown!

UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Morales
GOOD- Julian Erosa vs. Melquizael Costa
They start things off by trading kicks. Erosa gets hurt by a head kick
but battles back but continues to get nailed by strikes. Erosa waves
off a low blow before getting a takedown shortly before the first
round ends. The second round begins with more of the same. Both men
are connecting with good strikes, it’s just that Costa is connecting
with more and with more power behind them. They’re down on the mat and
right back up a few times before they stagger each other with power
strikes and the second round ends. The third round starts with a quick
clinch before Costa gets a takedown, though Erosa is quickly back to
his feet. Tremendous toughness is on display here as both men smash
each other with powerful strikes until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Costa wins the decision to improve to 24-7 and has won 4 straight
fights while Erosa drops to 31-12 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Great win for Costa.

GOOD- Dustin Stoltzfus vs. Nursulton Ruziboev
They start off trading kicks before mixing in punches. Stoltzfus knocks Ruziboev down and locks in a guillotine choke but Ruziboev
eventually reverses and works a little ground-and-pound before
Stoltzfus works his way back to his feet and the first round ends. The
second round begins with some early kicks before Stoltzfus gets a
takedown. They grapple for a while and beat on each other until the
second round ends. The third round starts with more striking exchanges
until Stoltzfus gets a takedown. They grapple for a while before
returning to their feet shortly before the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Ruziboev wins the decision to improve to 36-9-2 with 2 No Contests
while Stoltzfus drops to 16-7. Good win for Ruziboev.

GOOD- Sodiq Yusuff vs. Mairon Santos
They begin by trading kicks. Yusuff tries for a few takedowns but
can’t get them and the first round ends. The second round begins with
both fighters trading head kicks before mixing in some punches.
Santos’ leg kicks are hurting Yusuff and drop him for a moment. They
continue to trade strikes for the rest of the second round. The third round starts with more of the same, as both fighters trade strikes throughout another close round. The fight ends so we go to the judges
to render their verdict.
Santos wins the decision to improve to 16-1 and has won 4 straight
fights while Yusuff drops to 13-5 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Santos.

Rodolfo Bellato vs. Paul Craig was canceled and will be re-booked
in a few weeks.

GOOD- Michael Morales stops Gilbert Burns
They trade kicks to start before following with some errant punches.
Morales connects with a strong uppercut that forces Burns to shoot in
and he gets the takedown. Morales is right back up, though, and he unleashes a torrent of punches that drops Burns. Morales lets Burns
stand, not wanting to grapple with him, and proceeds to drop Burns
again with more heavy punches that force the referee to jump in to
stop the fight a bit over three and a half minutes into the first round. Wow. Only one other time was Burns stopped in the first round,
and that was all the way back in 2018 against Dan Hooker (24-12).
Morales improves to a perfect 18-0 while Burns drops to 22-9 and has
lost 4 straight fights. Phenomenal win for Morales.
