HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs. Brady

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs. Brady was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs. Brady
GOOD- Nathaniel Wood vs. Morgan Charriere
They trade kicks to start the fight before Wood mixes in some punches,
including one that drops Charriere. Wood follows him to the mat and
they grapple and fight there until the first round ends. The second
round begins with Wood continuing to land good strikes, though
Charriere is landing pretty well also. They keep this up throughout
the second round, with Charriere landing some strong elbows. The third
round starts and ends with a bit more deliberate striking from both men. The fight ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Wood wins the decision to improve to 21-6 while Charriere drops to 20-11-1. Good win for Wood.

GOOD- Chris Duncan submits Jordan Vucenic
They start off trading a few strikes until Duncan drops Vucenic with a
big right hand and pounces on him on the ground and tries to pound him
out. Vucenic stands but Duncan slams him back to the mat and the first
round ends. The second round begins with some striking before Duncan
gets a takedown. They’re up and down a few times before Duncan grabs a
guillotine and locks it in, forcing Vucenic to tap a little over three minutes and forty seconds into the second round.
Duncan improves to 13-2 while Vucenic drops to 13-4. Good win for Duncan.

GOOD- Alexia Thainara submits Molly McCann
They’re trading strikes early until Thainara gets a trip takedown and
starts using her ground-and-pound. She hunts for, and locks in, a rear-naked choke that makes McCann tap just over four and a half minutes into the first round.
Thainara improves to 12-1 and has won 10 straight fights while McCann
drops to 14-8. Good win for Thainara.

GOOD- Molly McCann retires
McCann retired in the cage after this loss. She’s only 34 years old so this might not stick but I wish her well in her life after fighting.

GOOD- Gunnar Nelson vs. Kevin Holland
Holland uses his length early to land some strikes before Nelson gets
a takedown. Holland fights well off of his back as they scramble. They stand and Holland drops Nelson right before the first round ends. The second round begins with Holland striking from multiple angles. Nelson keeps working for a takedown and is finally able to get it. Holland is
much more active off of his back and lands considerably more strikes
from there before the second round ends. The third round starts with
some striking exchanges until Nelson gets a takedown. Nelson is more
active this time but can’t get a submission and the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Holland wins the decision to improve to 27-13 with 1 No Contest while
Nelson drops to 19-6-1. Good win for Holland.

GOOD- Jan Blachowicz vs. Carlos Ulberg
Not a whole lot happens in the first round, as they largely just kick at each other. The second round begins with Blachowicz kicking while
Ulberg mixes up his striking. Ulberg staggers Blachowicz for a moment
but he recovers and they trade strikes until the second round ends.
The third round starts with both men continuing to attack the legs with kicks. They’re both throwing in the occasional punch with their
kicks and this fight is over. We go to the judges to render their
verdict on this middling fight.
Ulberg wins the decision to improve to 12-1 and has won 8 straight fights while Blachowicz drops to 29-11-1. Good win for Ulberg.

GOOD- Sean Brady submits Leon Edwards
They clinch over and over in the first round until Brady gets a late takedown and the first round ends. The second round begins with
Edwards getting warned about eyepokes. Brady gets an immediate
takedown and they’re up and down. Brady throws a lot of short strikes
for the rest of the second round. It’s complete domination. The third
round starts with some striking exchanges and a quick Brady clinch before they go to the mat for a bit. Edwards is up for a moment but
Brady takes him right back down and they grapple for a bit, with Brady
landing a lot of short strikes before the third round ends.
The fourth round opens with Brady getting a takedown and he starts
hunting submissions again. Brady locks in a guillotine that forces Edwards to tap a bit over a minute and a half into the first round.
Brady improves to 18-1 and has won 3 straight fights while Edwards
drops to 22-5 with 1 No Contest. Good win for Brady.

George Foreman died the other day at 76 years old. Foreman was a
boxing legend who also had a great out of ring career, though not as
good as what he accomplished inside the squared circle.
Foreman won an Olympic Gold Medal in the 1968 Olympics. He was a two-time world heavyweight champion, the oldest in history.
Foreman finished his career with a record of 76-5 (68 wins by
Knockout). He was only knocked out one time, by Muhammad Ali (56-5).
Foreman accomplished so much in his life that you could fill a
phonebook with all of his achievements.
My condolences to his family and friends.

My new epic fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: The End’s
Beginning
. The exciting epic fantasy series Kingdom of Zarias returns with the 4th book in the series. After the harrowing events of
Book 3 the residents of the Kingdom of Zarias continue on their paths.
Serena Summers continues to learn and grow as a fighter, desperately
seeking to become stronger before she loses anyone else in her life.
Daniel Summers discovers new parts of the world that open his eyes to
just how little he truly knows. A new hero, Lamar Abeers, arrives to
join the fight against evil. Plus, Zach Summers, Tiana Highsmith, and
Xavien Ekens continue their journeys with their friends, and a new ruler of Vhaharen is crowned. The world has found a little peace.
However, that peace is only temporary. In a shocking act of violence,
the monstrous villain Galren strikes from the shadows and changes the
world forever. This is Book 4 in the series. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop
game in novel form. It’s on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you
would check it out and support me. Also, here’s the link to my
Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias series- KoZ Compendium Thank you
