HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Rozenstruik

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Rozenstruik was yesterday afternoon and
featured some good fights with good finishes. Let’s get to the
rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Rozenstruik
GOOD- Alonzo Menifield stops Askar Mozharov
Menifield took Mozharov down early but not much happened for a few
minutes. Mozharov got back to his feet but got quickly taken down
again and Menifield unleashed some nasty elbows to force the referee
to jump in and stop the fight with about twenty seconds left in the
first round.Menifield improves to 12-3 while Mozharov drops to 19-13.
Good win for Menifield.

GOOD- Ode Osbourne stops Zarrukh Adashev
Adashev landed an early combination but Osbourne dropped him with a
hook and landed a few more punches to finish him off just over a
minute into the first round. Osbourne improves to 11-4 with 1 No
Contest while Adashev drops to 4-4. Good win for Osbourne.

GOOD- Karine Silva submits Poliana Botelho
They trade a lot of kicks early but nothing too threatening. Silva
misses with a head kick but then blasts Botelho with a big right hand
and gets the fight to the ground. From there she locks on a D’Arce
choke and Botelho taps with five seconds to go in the first round.
Silva improves to 15-4 and has won 6 fights in a row while Botelho
falls to 8-5 and has lost 3 fights in a row. Good win for Silva.

GOOD- Lucas Almeida stops Michael Trizano
They trade strikes early but it’s slow going here. Towards the end of
the first round Almeida gets popped with a counter hook and Trizano
drops him with a knee but Almeida survives. The strikes get heavier in
the second round and this time Trizano gets dropped, by a big left
hook. Trizano gets cut on a forehead clash as Almeida follows him
down. The round ends after they stand. The third round sees them trade
kicks before a big left hook drops Trizano again. Almeida pounces on
him and pounds him out to force the referee to jump in to stop the
fight not quite a minute into the third round. Almeida improves to
14-1 while Trizano falls to 9-3. Good win for Almeida.

GOOD- Movsar Evloev vs. Dan Ige
They trade strikes early, with Evloev getting the better of it. Ige
showed tremendous toughness by absorbing a flying knee to the face,
though. Evloev takes Ige down three times to finish the first round.
The second round opens with more striking exchanges. Again, Evloev
getting the better of it but Ige is fighting hard. Evloev gets another
takedown to end the round. The third round sees Ige get low-blowed.
This is after getting poked in the eyes in the second round. Evloev
takes Ige down over and over, that’ll improve Evloev’s takedown
percentage. Evloev works his ground-and-pound until the round and
fight ends. Evloev wins the decision and improves to a perfect 16-0
while Ige drops to 15-6 and has lost 3 fights in a row. Good win for
Evloev.

GOOD- Alexander Volkov stops Jairzinho Rozenstruik
They exchange kicks early before Rozenstruik hurts Volkov with a left
hook. However, Volkov fires back with a big right hand and follows
that with a flurry of punches to force the referee to jump in to stop
the fight a little over two minutes into the first round. Volkov
improves to 35-10 while Rozenstruik drops to 12-4. Some people are
arguing that it was an early stoppage by referee Herb Dean but I think
it was fine. It’s true that Rozenstruik could have possibly recovered
and fought on but the odds are much greater that he would have just
taken more punches and been knocked out 10-20 seconds later. So I’m
fine with the stoppage myself. Good win for Volkov.

My fantasy book is now out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: Undeath and
the Dewester Set
. It’s a fantasy epic that begins with the Summers
siblings but spreads out to encompass a large number of characters
across multiple stories as the world faces a threat from a vile
necromancer. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the
Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I
would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me.
