HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from Bellator 274 and UFC Fight NIght: Walker vs. Hill

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Bellator 274 and UFC Fight Night: Walker vs. Hill were both yesterday.
They both featured some big finishes. Who won and how? Let’s get to
the rundown.

Bellator 274
GOOD/BAD- Davion Franklin vs. Said Sowma
Franklin popped Sowma early and they spent the rest of the first round
occasionally trading strikes. Franklin came out in the second round
trying to take Sowma’s head off before they traded leg kicks. Sowma
got a trip but the round ended as they both got up. A slow third round
saw a bunch of missed strikes before a Franklin takedown. Franklin won
a split decision and improves to 5-0 while Sowma drops to 8-3. Good
win for Franklin.

GOOD- Brennan Ward stops Brandon Bell
Ward bloodies Bell’s nose early in the first round. Ward got a
takedown and started working his ground-and-pound. Ward beat the hell
out of Bell as he worked the body and head but Bell survived the
round. Ward opened the second round with a huge body shot before he
jumped Bell and started delivering blows until the referee was forced
to jump in to stop the fight a little over thirty second into the
second round. Ward improves to 15-6 and wins his return fight after
being away from fighting for 4 and a half years. Bell falls to 10-11
and has lost 4 fights in a row. Good win for Ward.

GOOD/BAD- Adam Piccolotti vs. Georgi Karakhanyan
Piccolotti got an early takedown in the first round. They spend the
rest of the round fighting on the ground but nothing is happening. The
second round opens with Karakhanyan landing some good right hands
before Piccolotti gets another takedown. This time he does some damage
before the round ends. There’s not enough action in this fight for me.
The third round sees Karakhanyan get a takedown but he couldn’t get a
finish so Piccolotti wins the decision and improves to 13-4 while
Karakhanyan drops to 31-13-1 with 1 No Contest. Good win for
Piccolotti.

GOOD- Andrey Koreshkov stops Chance Rencountre
Koreshkov quickly lands a spinning back kick to the body that floors
Rencountre and then finishes him off with strikes. Bigtime stoppage
that only takes 38 seconds. Koreshkov improves to 25-4 while
Rencountre falls to 16-5. Good win for Koreshkov.

GOOD- Logan Storely vs. Neiman Gracie
Storely came out firing in the first round, landing some big strikes.
Neiman landed some good strikes of his own. Storely got a takedown
early in the second round but nothing came of it. Storely kept firing
and landed some good shots, Gracie’s not doing much. Gracie was having
success with his jab but nothing else is working. He’s hesitant to
engage and Storely is beating him up. Storely took the third round as
well and Gracie has to get a finish to win now. The fourth round sees
both guys get hurt with strikes but they survive. I would give Storely
that round as well. The fifth round is more of the same so Storely
gets the decision victory and moves to 13-1 while Gracie drops to
11-3. Good win for Storely.

UFC Fight Night: Walker vs. Hill
GOOD- Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Joaquin Buckley
They trade strikes before Buckley gets some takedowns. Nothing much
came of them but they traded more strikes as the first round ended.
Both guys are successful with their takedowns in the second round and
they’re also swinging wildly. The third round sees more takedowns and
more big strikes landed. Buckley’s more active and he’s rewarded with
the Split Decision victory to improve to 14-4 while Alhassan drops to
11-5 and has now lost 4 of his last 5 fights. Good win for Buckley.

GOOD- Jim Miller stops Nikolas Motta
They trade strikes before Miller gets hurt by a Motta counter right
hand. Miller walks through it, though, and continues hitting leg
kicks. Miller’s just calmly picking away at Motta and hurting him. The
second round sees Miller land more leg kicks until he crushes Motta
with a big right hook. Miller jumps on him and forces the referee to
jump in to stop the fight not quite two minutes into the second round.
Miller improves to 34-16 with 1 No Contest while Motta falls to 12-4.
Good win for Miller.

GOOD- Alan Baudot vs. Parker Porter
Baudot lands some big shots but Porter returns fire. The second round
sees some back and forth. Porter gets a takedown but it’s mainly his
striking that wins him the round. They traded more strikes in the
third round before Porter landed another takedown. They end the fight
on the ground and Porter gets the decision win to improve to 12-6 and
has won 3 fights in a row while Baudot drops to 8-3 with 1 No Contest.
Good win for Porter.

GOOD- Kyle Daukaus submits Jamie Pickett
Daukaus gets a takedown and starts working for a submission. He can’t
get it but he gets another takedown and locks on a D’Arce choke and
Pickett taps with one second left in the first round. Daukaus improves
to 11-2 with 1 No Contest while Pickett drops to 13-7. Good win for
Daukaus.

GOOD- Jamahal Hill stops Johnny Walker
They trade a few strikes but nothing much until Hill clobbers Walker
with a huge right hand that puts him out not quite three minutes into
the first round. Holy crap that was brutal. Hill improves to 10-1 with
1 No Contest while Walker drops to 18-7 and has lost 4 of his last 5
fights. Good win for Hill with a huge highlight finish.

My new book is now out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: Undeath and
the Dewester Set
. It’s a fantasy epic that begins with the Summers
siblings but spreads out to encompass a large number of characters
across multiple stories as the world faces a threat from a vile
necromancer. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the
Kingdom of Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I
would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me.
Here’s the link to my book- My Book Thank you very much,
