Bellator 261 Review

Light Heavyweight Fight

Christian Edwards vs. Simon Biyong

This was a pretty one sided fight.  Edwards was landing all of the shots he needed to.  Biyong probably should’ve gone down in the first round but he managed to keep himself on his feet.  The 2nd round was Biyong trying to keep himself alive.  The ring doctor even told Biyong that he would have to prove he could defend himself before the 2nd round started.  Edwards simply kept control while going for the knockout.  This was a big win to stay unbeaten for Edwards.

Rating: 7/10

Result: Unanimous Decision for Christian Edwards

Featherweight Fight

Daniel Weichel vs. Keoni Diggs

This was a very entertaining and highly skilled fight.  It was tough to say who was in charge, but Weichel seemed to have things under control.  Diggs certainly did his best and landed a lot of good shots.  Weichel needs the win to keep climbing the ladder.  Diggs getting the upset would have put him into a great spot.  The decision went to Weichel on a split, which tells me the judges probably didn’t see enough of a reason to give it to the underdog.

Rating: 8.5/10

Result: Split Decision for Daniel Weichel

Lightweight Fight

Myles Jury vs. Sidney Outlaw

The vast majority of the first round was Outlaw getting Jury’s back and going for a submission while trying to wear him down.  Jury didn’t have any answer to get out of it.  The 2nd round was very much the same.  Outlaw just had Jury’s number to get his back on the ground and keep landing big shots until the round ended.  Outlaw got the same position again and then finally sunk in the rear naked choke after a couple impressive throws.

Rating: 7.5/10

Result: 3rd Round Submission for Sidney Outlaw

Women’s Flyweight

Liz Carmouche vs. Kana Watanabe

This fight didn’t take long at all. Carmouche caught Watanabe early and pummeled her until the ref stopped the fight.  Watanabe didn’t even have to go down.  Carmouche made this look easy.

Rating: 8/10

Result: 1st Round KO for Liz Carmouche

Interim Heavyweight Championship

Tim Johnson vs. Valentin Moldavsky

This was a pretty back and forth fight and a clear advantage wasn’t really established ntl the 3rd round when Moldavsky got Johnson in a down position for about a minute.  Johnson seemed more gassed as the fight progressed.  Moldavsky seemed to be setting up for a big run.  Johnson got cut pretty bad in the 4th round.  This was a serious heavyweight slugfest with the intent to get a KO.  Johnson never seemed to be able to mount any consistent offense.  He seemed willing to let Moldavsky circle him to not gas himself out.  Moldavsky had control throughout the fight.

Rating: 8/10

Result: Unanimous Decision for Valentin Moldavsky
