UFC 255 Review

Classic Finish
Shogun Hua vs. Paul Craig
Light Heavyweight Fight

There was nothing that stuck out about this fight. Both Fighters traded top position in the first round. Craig certainly had the upper hand the whole time, but Shogun seemed to just shrug it off so incredibly easily. The 2nd Rd was a very dominant showing for Craig. Once he got Shogun’s back it was all over, dropping heavy hands on Craig for the finish.
Rating: 7/10
Result: 2nd Rd TKO for Paul Craig

Length over Strength
Katlyn Chookagian vs. Cynthia Calvillo
Women’s Flyweight Fight

This fight was dominated from start to finish by Chookagian. It seemed like there was an opening Calvillo was waiting for and it never presented itself. The reach advantage was incredibly apparent in this fight. Calvillo was always reacting and didn’t seem willing to step in close and throw until the 3rd round.
Rating: 7.5/10
Result: Unanimous Decision for Katlyn Chookagian

Tag Em and Bag Em
Mike Perry vs. Tim Means
Welterweight Fight

This was an amazing fight to watch, especially with Mike Perry making his walk to the octagon to the wrong song, which was Beyonce’s Halo. To Mike’s credit, he just owned it and started belting it out as the cutman got him ready. Perry got the best of the first round by going for a submission, which is not his traditional style. Means kept the fight standing for the 2nd and 3rd rounds. No one really stood out as a winner, but Means did enough to win the judges over. Means talked about what he’s fighting for in his post fight interview, including fighting for custody of his kids and how much his family does to keep him out of trouble. I’ll be rooting for him hard from now on, keep track of this guy, he’s the real deal with a lot to fight for.
Rating: 8.5/10
Result: Unanimous Decision for Tim Means

And Still
Women’s Flyweight Championship
Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia

Maia showed a shocking ability to control the octagon in the first two rounds. Shevchenko finally caught her with a big shot in the 3rd and ran things on the ground for what was basically the rest of the round. Shevchenko ran the 4th round with some pretty serious dominance. She got the ground control timer up to 8 minutes. Maia seemed to run out of tricks. Maia seemed to be trying to not let Shevchenko get the lay of the land against her, and it worked early, but Shevchenko turned it on when she needed to and finished like champions do.
Rating: 7.5/10
Result: Unanimous Decision for Valentina Shevchenko

He Done It Again
Flyweight Championship
Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Alex Perez

Figueiredo did it again, another fight, another choke for the win. Perez missed a takedown thanks to a brilliant save by Figueiredo. Figueiredo just kept turning Perez around until he got him into that ever so familiar guillotine position. Perez tried to get to his feet to get out of it, but it wasn’t enough. Less than two minutes is all it took to hear the words, and still.
Rating: 8/10
Result: 1st Round Submission for Deiveson Figueiredo, Guillotine Choke (1:57)
