GROCKE’S DANA WHITE’S TUESDAY NIGHT CONTENDER SERIES REPORT 8/15 (WEEK 6): Grant Dawson and Charles Bryd impress, Jamie Colleen wins too

Dan Hellie welcomed viewers to the show and introduced Paul Felder onto the broadcast. The two talked about how by now fighters know what Dana White is looking for. They then ran down the five-fight card starting with the main event and working backwards down the card. They then introduced Snoop Dogg and Urijah Faber and the Snoopcast.

(1) Tiffany Masters (2-0) vs. Jamie Colleen (3-1) – Strawweight 115 lbs. 

Result: Jamie Colleen over Tiffany Masters by Submission (4:43 of Round 3 – Armbar) 

ROUND ONE: There were a lot of feints from Colleen to start the fight. A minute in they opened up with their offense and Colleen landed some big strikes at the 3:33 mark. Masters was able to lands a big knee to the body while in the clinch and followed up with a takedown wwith 2:30 to go. With two minutes to go Colleen got back to her feet, but Masters kept the pressure on. Masters was able to score with another takedown with a little over a minute left in the round. She tried to soften Colleen up while searching for a rear naked choke but Colleen was able to make to the horn.

ROUND TWO: Masters landed a right hand that put Colleen on the canvass 40 seconds into the round. Masters was instantly on her and kept up with some heavy ground and pound. With 2:30 to go Masters was still on top landing heavy punches and forearms. Masters transitioned to the back with a little over a minute to go and kept searching for a rear naked choke but again Colleen lasted to the horn.

ROUND THREE: Colleen came out and landed big strikes on the feet to start the last round. Masters went down, but Colleen wisely did not follow her to the ground. Masters shot in with 3:30 to go but Colleen defended it and ended up on top. With 2:30 left Colleen let Masters back up again. With two minutes to go the fight took place on the feet until Masters landed a big takedown with 1:38 left in the fight. Colleen grabbed an arm and had an armbar locked in out of nowhere with under a minute to go. Masters fought it off as long as she could, but finally had to tap.

(2) Martin Day (5-1) vs. Jamie Alvarez (6-1) – Flyweight 125 lbs.

ROUND ONE: Both guys traded low kicks to start the fight. Day landed a nice spinning kick with just under four minutes to go. Alvarez stated to walk Day down trying to get inside but Day did a great job maintain range with a steady barrage of kicks. With 1:32 to go Alvarez took Day down and landed some heavy ground and pound. Alvarez kept the pressure on until Day was able to get to his feet and landed a big takedown of his own and then another one when Alvarez got back up as the round ended.

ROUND TWO: Alvarez came out and landed some nice right hands and was able to take Day down and take the back 40 seconds into the round. Alvarez continued to try to soften Day up while searching for a rear naked choke. Day was able to break free for a moment but Alvarez was able to keep him on the mat. Alvarez began landing some heavy ground and pound with 1:40 to go in the round. Day was able to reverse position and ended up on top with 44 seconds left. It was short lived as Alvarez reversed back and ended the round landing more ground and pound.

ROUND THREE: Day landed a spinning kick 15 seconds in but Alvarez wasn’t bothered by it. They exchanged lowkicks with 3:38 to go and Day started landing big strikes on the feet. With three minutes to go Day started landing big shots that Alvarez just ate. Alvarez has a great chin. Alvarez caught a kick with a little over two minutes left but Alvarez didn’t have the energy to do anything with it. With a 1:20 left Day continued to land big shots. Day was clearly in survival mode for the last three minutes of the fight and was able to make to the decision.

(3) Karl Reed (2-0) vs. Cameron Olson (6-3, 1 NC) – Light Heavyweight 205 lbs.

ROUND ONE: Olson came out and tried to get inside while getting into the clinch as the fight started. They finally separated with 3:22 left in the round and fought from center cage. Reed peppered Olson with jabs bloodying his nose. They went back to the clinch with 2:30 left. At 2:05 Olson took a poke to the eye but the resumed after a brief time out. Olson showed more aggression when the fight resumed and landed knees to the body of Reed in the clinch. With under a minute left Olson continued landing knees with Reed pinned to the fence and that’s how the round ended.

ROUND TWO: Both fighters came out throwing hands to start the second round. Olson had a guillotine locked in briefly a minute in but Reed was able to break free. They stood center cage with 3:30 to go and Olson scored with a takedown with a little over three minutes to go. Olson began taking over the fight with 2:40 left in the round. He landed some heavy ground and pound with Reed not doing much from bottom. With 1:30 left Reed was able to work back to his feet but Olson kept him pinned to the fence. The fight remained in the clinch with neither guy landing anything of significance as the second round came to a close.

ROUND THREE: Reed landed a nice knee 20 seconds in but Olson was able to take Reed down at 4:20 in the round. Reed worked back to his feet and landed in the clinch against the fence. With a little over three minutes to go Olson kept the pressure on Reed against the fence. Olson landed another takedown with 2:27 left but Reed was back up quickly. The rest of the fight was spent with Olson lying on Reed up against the fence. It was a boring fight.

(4) Grant Dawson (11-1) vs. Adrian Diaz (11-4-1) – Middleweight 185 lbs.

ROUND ONE: Both guys came out looking throw hands with Dawson getting the better of the early exchange. Dawson landed a takedown a minute into the fight. Dawson started landing his ground and pound with just over three minutes to go, but Diaz remained active from bottom. Dawson landed a big elbow followed by a right hand with 2:00 left in the round. Diaz started to slow from underneath as the round progressed with Dawson landing heavy ground and pound. Dawson went for a Kimura with 19 seconds left but realized quickly he didn’t have and transitioned to a rear naked choke but Diaz was saved by the horn. That had to be 10-8 for Dawson.

ROUND TWO: Dawson took Diaz down ten seconds into the round and went right back to his ground and pound. Dawson took the back and sunk in a rear naked choke and Diaz tapped rather quickly.

(5) Charles Byrd (7-4) vs. Randall Wallace (15-6) – Middleweight 185 lbs.

ROUND ONE: Byrd came out and landed a big leg kick and followed up with a right hand. They clinched briefly but they were back to center cage. Wallace landed a takedown a minute in and took the back with 3:30 to go. Wallace worked at softening Byrd up while searching for a rear naked choke. Byrd exploded up and reversed position with just under three minutes left. Byrd started to land heavy ground and pound but Wallace got back to his feet with just over two to go. Byrd landed a takedown with 1:36 left in the round and worked from top position. Byrd postured up with 50 seconds left and went right back down for more ground and pound. The round ended with Byrd in top position.

ROUND TWO: Byrd went back to leg kicks and followed up with a takedown 30 seconds into the round. Byrd landed heavy ground and pound in top position with just under four minutes left in the round. Byrd took the back at the 3:11 mark and went for a rear naked choke was able to get the tap.

It was another fun night of fights. We saw our first women’s fight and our first two-time winner in the competition.

Charles Byrd, Grant Dawson, and Jamie Colleen each had wins by submission, but ultimately Dana White chose Grant Dawson and Charles Byrd.
