Fedor Emelianennko vs. Matt Mitrione is being targeted by Bellator for early 2017, according to a report at FloCombat this afternoon. Story excerpt:
Multiple sources have confirmed with FloCombat a bout between “The Last Emperor” and former UFC veteran turned Bellator contender Matt Mtirione is being targeted for early 2017. While there is still nothing official on the bout, FloCombat has learned the fight is close to being a done deal.
A matchup between Emelianenko and Mitrione would not only be the biggest fight in the history of the promotion’s heavyweight division, but on par to be one of the most high-profile tilts ever put together under the Bellator banner.
Keller’s Analysis: Bellator continues to make waves. There’s no real cohesion to the moves they’re making, but in terms of individual fights attracting people’s attention who otherwise exclusively pay attention to UFC, Bellator is making more news than usual lately. Fedor is enough of a legend that until it’s obvious he’s totally aged out, any MMA contest he’s involved in is appointment viewing. Both fighters would really have something at stake in this fight. Fedor is trying to prove he will face and can beat a top 15 heavyweight, and Mitrione would have a career elevating moment if he were to beat the legend of Fedor.
