Stipe Miocic came out on top in a wild back and forth bout with Alistair Overeem that saw Miocic come close to losing his title.

Though he was surprised by Overeem’s power, Miocic felt confident about his abilities and remained patient throughout the fight. “I knew eventually I was gonna get him and then I got that take down and that was all she wrote,” he said at the post-fight press conference.

Miocic did not commit to whom he would like to fight next, but did acknowledge Fabricio Werdum as a legitimate option. “Werdum said I should fight him next,” he said. “Whatever they want me to do, he’s a nice guy.”

Before he fights again, Miocic does plan on taking some time off to celebrate his status as a newlywed. “I’m gonna take some time off to myself,” he said. “Go on a honeymoon with my wife and treat her.”

Cervantes Analysis: It was a very exciting back and forth bout all the way up to the finish I picked Miocic to win ahead of this bout. Overeem, for all his success as of late, is simply not the same fighter he was when he made his debut in 2011 when he destroyed Brock Lesnar. He also did not do himself any favors after the fight when he claimed that Miocic had tapped to the guillotine earlier in the fight. Great win for Miocic in his hometown in what was a spectacular performance. Looking ahead, he may very well be the one to break the heavyweight record for most title defenses.
