Yet another title fight is off due to injury, as Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson has been forced to withdraw from his title defense against Wilson Reis at UFC 201 on July 30 in Atlanta, Ga.
Globo in Brazil was the first to report the news, though it’s since been corroborated by multiple reports.
There’s no word on the nature of the injury, nor on how long Johnson will be out. Considering the UFC’s plans for The Ultimate Fighter 24 and the flyweight division, they may still book the Reis fight, or they could hold Johnson out until December if he’s going to be out for any considerable amount of time.
The injury strikes a blow to an already underwhelming card, as it was set to serve as the co-main event under Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley for the Welterweight Championship. The event is the UFC’s first trip back to Atlanta since April of 2012.
Penick’s Analysis: Not that anyone was all that intrigued by the fight to begin with, but watching one of the best pound for pound fighters do his thing was one of the only draws on this card. It was almost entirely Lawler and “Mighty Mouse,” and though Lawler is fantastic to watch the matchup with Woodley just doesn’t inspire tons of confidence.
