“I believe I can [knock him out]. I believed I could knock out Rory MacDonald, Johny Hendricks and Jake Ellenberger and sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t, but I know I can knock these guys out. I know I can knock Robbie Lawler out. He’s going to move forward and he’s going to end up walking into something… It definitely puts a smile on my face that people think I might be a favorite in that fight. I think people are starting to see the skills I have, the karate style that I use and hopefully, we’ll get more people out there studying and getting into karate as well. It does put a smile on my face.”
-Stephen Thompson talks to FoxSports.com about his expected future title fight with Robbie Lawler after his UFC Fight Night 89 win.
Penick’s Analysis: Thompson’s got the striking ability to take out anyone at 170 lbs. at this point. The conditions of particular fights, and the work from his opponents affects how those bouts play out, but if and when he lands those big strikes they can take anyone out. Lawler included. It can be argued that Lawler’s style plays right into what Thompson can do best, and that aggressive nature can get people caught. Thompson knows that, he’ll be ready for that, and he might just take the UFC Welterweight Title in spectacular fashion because of that.
