Saturday’s UFC 198 event brought quite a bit of exciting action to the 45,000 fans in attendance in Curitiba, leaving the UFC with numerous options for post-fight awards. Ultimately, the $50,000 bonuses were handed to Stipe Miocic, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Francisco Trinaldo, and Yancy Medeiros.
Miocic and Souza each earned “Performance of the Night” awards for their respective first round finishes over Fabricio Werdum and Vitor Belfort, respectively. Miocic’s win came with another award, as he captured the UFC Heavyweight Championship with a short right hand as Werdum was trying to chase him around the cage. Souza, meanwhile, may have locked up his own shot at a UFC Title, getting Belfort to the ground easily before beating up with strikes from top position for the finish.
Trinaldo and Medeiros had a wild fight on the Fox Sports 1 prelims for the event, earning them both the “Fight of the Night” award. Trinaldo was in control for most of the fight, doing more damage and finding more success in his strikes than was Medeiros, but the Hawaiian proved tougher than was perhaps good for him. He took an absolute beating in the third round, but refused to be put away (thanks in part to incompetent refereeing). He lost a clear decision, but the exciting nature of the bout brought them both an extra $50,000.
