Though Jon Jones got in a dig at Conor McGregor’s pound for pound status after the Irishman was defeated at UFC 196 on Saturday night, he sent out a much more positive message in reaction to how McGregor’s been taking the loss.

In a video posted to Instagram with the caption “Gained even more respect for [Conor McGregor] last night,” Jones was very positive in his response to the UFC Featherweight Champion.

“Wanted to take a quick second to shout out Conor McGregor for the way he handled defeat last night,” Jones said (transcribed by FoxSports.com). “He really handled it like a champion.

“He took a gamble fighting anyone, anywhere. A gamble he lost, but in a way he won cause he really got to show some great character so a shout out to you.”

Penick’s Analysis: Again, though there’s some schadenfreude to be had for those who didn’t like McGregor’s attitude and charisma to date, respect should come along with it. A loss is a loss, but he made the attempt. He got in the cage, he tried to do something we haven’t seen others accomplish, and he failed. The failure isn’t the end of him, especially with how he’s dealt with things here, and what’s important now is how he follows up that defeat. Getting the recognition of his peers is a positive, and he’s doing what he has to right now after the loss.
