Cody Garbrandt was supposed to meet John Lineker on Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 83, but a battle with Dengue fever knocked the Brazilian out of the event less than two weeks before the event. As a result, Garbrandt took on late replacement Augusto Mendes, a fight he won by TKO in the first round.

After the victory, his third straight in the UFC, Garbrandt says that the Lineker fight still appears to be in line for his next outing.

“We just talked with [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby and [UFC owner Lorenzo] Fertitta, so Lineker is my next bout as soon as he gets healthy,” Garbrandt said at the post-fight press conference.

Lineker had been a rising contender at flyweight, but a continued inability to make weight forced the move up to the 135 lb. field. He scored a win over Francisco Rivera in his divisional debut, a wild fight which saw him drop Rivera several times before submitting him.

Garbrandt, still undefeated, has won all eight of his career fights. The 24-year-old also now holds (T)KO wins over seven of those opponents.
