Sparks fly between McGregor and Alvarez already at tonight’s UFC 205 press conference in NYC (w/Keller’s Analysis)

Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor with Dana White

Conor McGregor mocked Eddie Alvarez at this evening’s press conference in New York City for UFC 205 coming up Nov. 12. He didn’t mock his fighting ability as much as he mocked his deal-making ability.

McGregor said Alvarez took the money offered to him for a different fight and agreed to fight for that against him at UFC 205. He said Alvarez accepted UFC telling him to “shut his mouth and take your pay.” He said this is the biggest fight in the history of UFC and Alvarez took regular fight money. Alvarez, smiling as Conor went on his signature verbal assault, asked: “Are you done yet?”

Alvarez then said McGregor is “easy money” and the easiest opponent he could have faced among the top contenders. “He quits after eight minutes every fight,” he said. “He’s not a championship fighter. He’s never been. He’s never fought anyone in UFC like me, ever.”

McGregor predicted a first round victory. “He’s has a chin, he gets cracked, he gets dropped,” McGregor said. “He’s a weathered fighter, on his way out.”

Alvarez reiterated that he doesn’t see McGregor as a threat to him or his Lightweight Title.  “You are the easiest opponent who made the most money, that’s why you were picked,” said Eddie. Conor replied: “Come f—ing prove it.”

Alvarez did score a point when he told Conor to take off his “stupid glasses.” Conor said over and over “make me” and leaned in toward him. Eventually Conor took them off as he kept saying “make me.” Alvarez said, “Ah! You took off your glasses.” Conor put them back on, knocked over his nameplate and coffee cup, and then got settled back in his chair.

Keller’s Analysis: Well, we’re off to a good start. That probably trumped last night’s Presidential Debate for fireworks. Six more weeks of that? This has a chance to shatter PPV buy records. Conor showed why he gets paid big bucks in this press conference. Dana White, of course, was loving every second of this. This was easily the top vote getter in our poll asking MMATorch readers which of three rumored top fights they most wanted to see. This hype is just the start of why. Then there’s the fight itself.
