In tragic news, UFC fighter Allan Nascimento died last week at the very young age of 34. I send my condolences to his friends and family.
PFL Charlotte: Battle vs. Rosta and UFC Fight Night: Gamrot vs. Salkilld were this past weekend and featured a lot of exciting fights. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.
PFL Charlotte: Battle vs. Rosta
GOOD- Josh Fremd stops Jhony Gregory
Gregory comes out firing away, prompting Fremd to grab a clinch. The referee separates them and Fremd gets a takedown. They grapple until the end of the first round. The second round begins with Fremd pushing forward against what appears to be a tired Gregory. They trade strikes until Fremd nails Gregory with an overhand right and more punches drop him. The referee jumps in to stop the fight a bit over a minute and a half into the second round.
Fremd improves to 13-6 while Gregory drops to 11-5. Good win for Fremd.
GOOD- Lewis McGrillen vs. Brandon Lewis
The strikes are coming from all angles by McGrillen, who drops Lewis with a big left hand. He gets up and they trade more strikes until Lewis goes for a takedown. Things stall so they trade more strikes until Lewis gets a takedown this time and the first round ends. The second round begins with more strikes being traded before McGrillen stuffs a takedown and lands on top and elbows are flying. They keep striking, even as they get back to their feet. McGrillen is bleeding from his right eyebrow. The third round starts with more strikes being traded before they clinch. Lewis gets a takedown but McGrillen is quickly back to his feet. Lewis gets another takedown but again, McGrillen is quickly back up and they trade bombs until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
McGrillen wins the decision to improve to 13-2 while Lewis drops to 7-4. Good win for McGrillen.
GOOD- Aaron Jeffrey vs. Joshua Silveira
They trade some strikes before Jeffrey grabs a clinch. This repeats a few times and the first round ends. The second round begins with more striking before Jeffrey grabs a clinch. Silveira gets a takedown this time but they’re both right back up. More clinching and this time Jeffrey gets a takedown. Elbows are traded and Silveira is bleeding. The third round starts with Jeffrey continuing to work the clinch as they keep striking. Jeffrey gets a quick takedown but Silveira is back to his feet. They trade strikes until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Jeffrey wins the decision to improve to 17-6 while Silveira drops to 15-6. Good win for Jeffrey.
BAD- Simeon Powell vs. Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov
Tentative start with not much happening. They trade a few strikes and Powell gets a takedown. The second round begins with pretty much a repeat of the first round. There’s not a lot going on outside of the occasional strike being landed. Fans boo. Good, this fight sucks so far. The third round starts with some kicks being traded as the fans shower boos down on the fighters. “Boring” chants break out as well. Fans keep booing as the fighters trade a few strikes and thankfully this terrible fight is over. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Powell wins the Split Decision to improve to 13-2 while Yagshimuradov drops to 26-9-1. Moving on.
GOOD- Bryan Battle vs. Dalton Rosta
Both men are throwing a lot of jabs and kicks early. Things slow way down and the first round ends. The second round begins with more short strikes being thrown from the clinch. Not a lot going on now and the second round ends. The third round starts with more short striking and that’s largely it outside of some clinching. Battle keeps pressing Rosta into the fence. The fight ends so we go to the judges to render their verdict.
Battle wins the Split Decision to improve to 13-3 with 1 No Contest while Rosta drops to 11-4 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Battle.
UFC Fight Night: Gamrot vs. Salkilld
GOOD- Ty Miller stops Billy Ray Goff
Goff engages a clinch and lands an elbow then they trade knees. Miller is able to land some strikes as Goff continues to try to clinch and the first round ends. The second round begins with Miller coming out on fire and peppering Goff with jabs and multiple combinations. Miller drops Goff with a combo and starts pounding away but Goff is able to stand up. Miller is crushing Goff here but the second round ends to save him. Coaches maybe should have thrown in the towel, yeah? The third round starts with rights from Miller that hurts Goff and then he pounces with punches to force the referee to jump in to stop the fight fifteen seconds into the third round.
Miller improves to a perfect 8-0 while Goff drops to 9-5 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Miller.
GOOD- Amanda Lemos vs. Alexia Thainara
They start off trading kicks before mixing in punches. They clinch and Thainara keeps landing knees to the body. She’s also scoring with some powerful punches. Neither woman can get a takedown, though, and the first round ends. The second round begins with more powerful strikes from Thainara. Suddenly, Lemos nails Thainara with a strong overhand, then another. Thainara clinches and they trade some strikes, Lemos being bloodied. Thainara gets a takedown before the second round ends. The third round starts with Thainara scoring with strikes from multiple angles before getting a takedown. Thakainara stays active and continues punishing Lemos until the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Thainara wins the decision to improve to 15-1 and has won 13 straight fights while Lemos drops to 15-7-1 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Thainara.
GOOD- Yadier del Valle stops Darren Elkins
del Valle smashes Elkins with a left hook, then another that drops him. He follows up with a few punches as the referee jumps in to stop the fight.
del Valle improves to 11-1 while Elkins drops to 29-13. Good win for del Valle.
This was Elkins’ final fight, his retirement fight. I wish him good health and happiness and I hope he enjoys retirement after a good career.
GOOD- Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Billy Quarantillo
They’re firing away at each other right from the start. Strikes are flying from all angles with good toughness being shown by both men until Ferreira gets a takedown. Ferreira works his ground-and-pound for a while until Quarantillo gets up and the first round ends. The second round begins with more fierce striking exchanges. Ferreira is starting to pull ahead in terms of damage inflicted but Quarantillo won’t go away. Ferreira gets a takedown but Quarantillo is quickly back to his feet and they continue beating on each other until the second round ends. The third round starts with some strikes being traded until Quarantillo gets a takedown. Ferreira works his way up and reverses things then uses his ground-and-pound before Quarantillo does the same for a while and the fight ends. We go to the judges to render their verdict.
Ferreira wins the decision to improve to 20-7 while Quarantillo drops to 18-8 and has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Ferreira.
GOOD- Quillan Salkilld submits Mateusz Gamrot
They trade strikes early, with Salkilld cracking Gamrot a few times. Salkilld gets a takedown and moves to the back, where he locks in a tight rear-naked choke that forces the tap almost four and a half minutes into the first round. Wow.
Salkilld improves to 13-1 and has won 13 straight fights while Gamrot drops to 26-5 with 1 No Contest. Good win for Salkilld.
