HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Bonfim vs. Brown

UFC Fight Night: Bonfim vs. Brown was this past weekend and featured
some exciting fights and finishes. Who won and who lost? Let’s get to
the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Bonfim vs. Brown
GOOD- Christian Leroy Duncan stops Marco Tulio
They start off trading some kicks before Duncan slashes Tulio’s forehead with an elbow, forcing Tulio to get a takedown to slow him
down. Duncan fights back to his feet and they clinch against the cage
as Tulio wraps his fingers in the wire. They separate and Tulio uses a
Duncan kick attempt to knock him to the ground. Duncan is immediately
back to his feet and slams Tulio to the mat and stays on top of him
until the first round ends. The second round begins with Duncan being
a whirling dervish of strikes from all angles flying at Tulio.
Duncan’s eye is cut from a good Tulio punch and Tulio pressures Duncan
up close. Duncan gets some separation and nails Tulio with a spinning
back fist, then another, that staggers him. Duncan moves forward with
a left-right combination that knocks Tulio out and he hits him unnecessarily on the ground one more time before the referee can jump
in to stop the fight not quite three and a half minutes into the second round.
Duncan improves to 13-2 and has won 3 straight fights while Tulio
drops to 14-2 and has his 10 fight winning streak snapped. Strong win for Duncan.

GOOD- Chris Padilla stops Ismael Bonfim
They start off exchanging a lot of strikes. Padilla tries for a takedown but can’t get it so he knees Bonfim in the stomach several
times as they clinch against the cage. Bonfim answers with a thudding
uppercut and knee that knock Padilla down shortly before the first
round ends. The second round begins with some fast striking exchanges,
as both men are constantly throwing. Bonfim shoots in for a takedown
but Padilla begins blasting him with big punches that turn the lights
out four and a half minutes into the second round.
Padilla improves to 17-6 and has won 7 straight fights while Bonfim drops to 20-6. Good win for Padilla.

GOOD- Uros Medic stops Muslim Salikhov
They trade early havy strikes before Medic connects with a head kick.
Medic drops Salikhov with a left hand and follows up with more punches
until the referee jumps in to stop the fight just over a minute into the first round. Wow.
Medic improves to 12-3 while Salikhov drops to 22-6 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Great win for Medic.

GOOD- Joseph Morales submits Matt Schnell
They trade some strikes before Schnell gets a trip takedown. Morales
quickly reverses and starts grinding away. Schnell tries to counter
but gives up an easy guillotine so Morales takes it and squeezes it until Schnell surrenders not quite three minutes into the first round.
I’m not sure if this is another example of some apparent fight-fixing but it’ll certainly be looked at. It seems like a lot of fights, past and current, are being looked at.
Morales improves to 14-2 and has won 5 straight fights while Schnell
drops to 17-10 with 1 No Contest. Nice win for Morales.

GOOD- Gabriel Bonfim stops Randy Brown
They start off with a lot of jabs and kicks. Brown is feeling the
effects of the many leg kicks Bonfim has nailed him with. Brown’s calf
is swelling and welted from the repeated attacks. Bonfim continues tearing up Brown’s calf to the point that he jumps forward with a knee
as he does the Palpatine and stabs Bonfim in the eye. Geez, we can’t
even go a short while without this junk happening. Anyway, of course
no points are taken and the first round ends. The second round begins
with Brown firing away while Bonfim tries to counter. Bonfim continues
hitting those leg kicks and when Brown ducks down to throw a right
hand Bonfim answers with a crushing knee that sends Brown to the mat.
The referee jumps in to stop the fight a hundred seconds into the second round. Brown immediately starts complaining that it was an
early stoppage but the replays show that it was a good stoppage.
Besides, does anyone really think Brown was going to stage a miraculous recovery and get the win? Possible, of course, but extremely unlikely.
It doesn’t help that Dominick Cruz on commentary keeps grumbling about
Brown not being given enough time to defend himself or to recover.
Yeah, that’s just what he needs, more chances to get some permanent
damage done to him. I would much rather have early stoppages than late
stoppages. I know there’s a money aspect involved here, with taking
losses and your potential earnings and all that, but I think this needs to be about long-term health for the fighters. Of course, the
fighters should all be paid more but that’s another rant for another day.
Anyway, Bonfim improves to 19-1 and has won 4 straight fights while Brown drops to 20-7. Good win for Bonfim.
