Bellator’s broadcast strategy for Bellator 223 and Bellator London was rather confusing, what do you make of the strange broadcast scheduling?

Horrible! Should have had a full day of MMA. Instead, I was watching “The Karate Kid” instead of one of the most shocking fights of the year. By the time UFC Greenville started I had no interest in Bellator because of MMA Twitter spoilers. Should have been prime television on a Saturday afternoon, because of one of the best fighters on earth fighting a legit contender, but noooooo, Karate Kid!

I thought it was stupid to have not had the Rafael Lovato Jr. vs. Gegard Mousasi title fight live on Paramount, but I get that a network has a schedule and obligations and all that. It’s still dumb but whatever. What I really don’t get is not having the fight on Paramount at all. That doesn’t make any sense. Going with the tape delay is supposed to give you the ability to edit the show into what works best, and not having a title fight is crazy. I suppose this gave DAZN a little extra juice, but I still think it’s dumb. Hopefully this doesn’t become a recurring thing with Bellator.

There is nothing inherently wrong with putting important fights on different platforms in order to drive traffic. However, the non-linear nature of how Bellator handled this on Saturday is not the way to go. Bellator needs to do a better job of explicitly defining where every fight will air. I don’t think the public has a god awareness of the difference between the Bellator app, and DAZN at this point. Additionally, in 2019, if fights air online, they need to be available on-demand immediately.
