Derrick Lewis marches to the beat of his own drum. He’s fighting for a world heavyweight championship in less than two weeks. He was never really all that interested in taking the fight – he said as much in the cage following his win over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229. He took the fight anyway and it’s hard to blame him. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Lewis to get a big payday and headline a show at Madison Square Garden. Winning the UFC heavyweight title would be life-changing for Lewis.
The opportunities that could follow a win over Cormier include further big money fights with former champ Stipe Miocic, or a returning Brock Lesnar. Lesnar and Cormier made a fight between the two of them a near certainty following their in cage confrontation at UFC 226. Now, Lewis can swoop and and steal that fight from under Cormier with a win on Nov. 3.
You would think this would be an exciting prospect to Lewis, but when asked recently about what could come post-Cormier, Lewis wasn’t that into it.
“It doesn’t matter who’s next,” Lewis told reporters at a UFC 230 media day (via MMA Junkie). “It doesn’t matter,” is a common utterance for fighters who want to seem like they will take on all comers but with Lewis, it seems that he’s really not concerned about the future.
“If it’s Miocic or Lesnar, that’s fine,” Lewis added Whatever the UFC wants to pay me for, that’s fine. I don’t care who’s next.”
A Lesnar-Lewis fight is a fun idea that we’ve discussed here as having a lot of potential. But if Derrick Lewis doesn’t care, we probably shouldn’t get our hopes up.
