Georges St-Pierre has not entirely decided whether or not to return to action, but according to his boxing coach Freddie Roach, they’ve devised a plan to make that determination one way or another.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Roach explained that the former long-reigning UFC Welterweight Champ will essentially put together a test camp, and if he feels he wants to fight at the end of that, they’ll move forward with setting up a return bout.
“We came up with a process. He’s going to train for a fight. He’s going to have a six-week training camp,” said Roach (transcribed by MMAMania.com). “And at the end of the six weeks if he feels like he’s ready to fight and he’s hungry for it like he always has been he’s going to do it.
“I think it’s really smart to do that to see where he’s at in his mind. Does he really want to fight again or not?”
St-Pierre took a voluntary hiatus from the sport after a controversial decision over Johny Hendricks two years ago, relinquishing his title belt in the process. The 34-year-old holds a 25-2 overall record, having forcefully avenged his only two career losses, and if he returns he’ll attempt to extend his winning streak to 13 fights.
Penick’s Analysis: He’s seriously considering this return, and he’s handling it in a smart way by first finding out whether or not he’s mentally up for the rigors of a full fight camp. If he can get through a six week process like that, and still feel the itch to get back in the cage, we’ll see him back in the cage next year. If he decides that it’s just not worth it, then he won’t. It’s the right way to do this if he is indeed trying to make that determination.
