HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland was this last weekend. Who
won and who lost? Let’s get to the rundown.

UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland
GOOD- Michal Oleksiejczuk stops Cody Brundage
Brundage gets a quick takedown. Oleksiejczuk grabs the fence to get up
but gets pulled back down. However, he reverses and ends up on top
where he proceeds to use his ground-and-pound and smash Brundage to
force the stoppage a bit over three minutes into the first round.
Oleksiejczuk improves to 18-5 with 1 No Contest while Brundage drops
to 8-3. Good win for Oleksiejczuk.

GOOD- Drew Dober stops Bobby Green
They exchange strikes early, with Green landing some powerful punches.
Dober fights back and both men begin landing some strong strikes.
Green is landing a lot but Dober keeps coming forward and the first
round ends. The second round begins with more hard striking exchanges.
Both fighters are showing good toughness but Dober pushes through to
land a powerful left hand that knocks Green out not quite three
minutes into the second round. Dober improves to 26-11 with 1 No
Contest (with half of those wins coming by knockout) and has won 3
straight fights while Green drops to 29-14-1. Good win for Dober.

GOOD- Alex Caceres stops Julian Erosa
Caceres starts off throwing kicks before mixing in a few body shots.
Erosa fires back but Caceres catches him with a big head kick and
follows up with some punches to force the referee to jump in to stop
the fight just over three minutes into the first round. Caceres
improves to 20-13 with 1 No Contest while Erosa drops to 28-10 and has
his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for Caceres.

GOOD- Amir Albazi stops Alessandro Costa
Slow start as neither fighter does much of note. Albazi gets stuffed
on a few takedown attempts while Costa lands a few strikes before the
first round ends. The second round opens with Costa landing a few
strikes before getting dropped by Albazi. The rest of the round is
spent on the ground. The third round starts with a striking exchange
before Albani gets a takedown. Costa gets back up but soon gets
crushed by an Albani uppercut. A few followup punches forces the
referee to jump in to stop the fight. Albani wins and improves to 16-1
and has won 5 straight fights while Costa drops to 12-3. Good win for
Albani.

GOOD- Damir Ismagulov vs. Arman Tsarukyan
Tsarukyan gets an early takedown. Ismagulov works his way up but
Tsarukyan stays attached. They separate after a few reversals and
punch each other a few times before the first round ends. The second
round opens with a little striking but it’s mainly Tsarukyan working
for and getting some takedowns. They separate at the end of the second
round and trade elbow strikes. The third round sees more of the same,
as Tsarukyan gets some more takedowns. Ismagulov is able to avoid
being finished but Tsarukyan wins the decision and improves to 19-3
while Ismagulov drops to 24-2 and has his remarkable 19 fight winning
streak snapped. Good win for Tsarukyan.

BAD/GOOD- Jared Cannonier vs. Sean Strickland
They exchange strikes in the first round. Cannonier mainly favors
punches while Strickland tries to mix it up with some kicks as well.
The second round sees Strickland go very passive. He seems content to
just play defense as Cannonier starts throwing a lot of kicks. The
third round sees a complete change, as Cannonier lays off the kicks
and only throws punches. This is only a step above sparring at this
point, both men seem content to conserve energy and not take any
chances. Round four is more of the same, though Strickland gets more
active and both fighters are throwing kicks. The fifth and final round
starts with a replay of the fourth round. No wait, they’re just doing
the exact same thing. I will say, they both threw tons of strikes.
Less than half landed for Cannonier and even less for Strickland,
though. Cannonier gets the win by Split Decision and improves to 16-6
while Strickland drops to 25-5. Good win for Cannonier in a close
fight.

My new fantasy book is now out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: A Fight For
Survival
. It’s the third book in my epic fantasy Kingdom of Zarias
series and follows the adventures of the Summers siblings as they
fight to defend the world from an evil villain named Galren. This book
also introduces lots of other characters as the scope of the world
grows. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of
Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would
greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Also,
here’s the link to my new Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias
series- KoZ Compendium
