HYDEN BLOG: PFL 2022 Championships and What Is Power Slap?

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

There were no Bellator or UFC events this past week so I’ll just go
over some news. The PFL, Professional Fighters League, had their 2022
championships. I’ll talk about the highlights from that as well as
talk about something called Power Slap. It’s a slow week.

The PFL 2022 Championships featured six title fights and six new
winners. For those who might not know, the PFL has a regular season
where the fighters earn points for winning. Then the top fighters in
each division advance to the playoffs and the tournament begins, with
the winner in each division becoming the champion and earning a $1
million prize. The winners this year were-

Heavyweight- Ante Delija

Light Heavyweight- Rob Wilkinson

Welterweight- Sadibou Sy

Men’s Lightweight- Olivier Aubin-Mercier

Women’s Lightweight- Larissa Pacheco

Featherweight- Brendan Loughnane

The big upset of the night and season came from Larissa Pacheco
beating Kayla Harrison by decision. That was Harrison’s first loss,
she had previously won her first 15 fights (with 12 finishes),
including two earlier wins over Pacheco, both in 2019. This is the
biggest win in Pacheco’s career. Congratulations to her and the other
winners.

I just saw this, though I think the news is from a few weeks ago. Dana
White is heading up a new organization in the world of slap fighting.
It’s called Power Slap and is apparently coming to TBS sometime early
next year.
If you don’t know what slap fighting is, it’s basically what it sounds
like. Two people stand at arms length from each other and take turns
slapping the you know what out of each other. It’s really popular but
this is supposed to be a little different in that it’s regulated by
the Nevada State Athletic Commission. They’re also going to use
mouthpieces and ear plugs. I don’t know about this, it sounds
incredibly reckless and dangerous. There was a death last year at a
slap fighting show. Artur Walczak was injured and placed into a coma
but passed away later. I don’t know enough about this stuff to speak
definitively but this sounds like a really bad idea for Dana to be
involved with this. Maybe I’m wrong, though?

My new fantasy book is now out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: A Fight For
Survival
. It’s the third book in my epic fantasy Kingdom of Zarias
series and follows the adventures of the Summers siblings as they
fight to defend the world from an evil villain named Galren. This book
also introduces lots of other characters as the scope of the world
grows. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of
Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would
greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Also,
here’s the link to my new Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias
series- KoZ Compendium
