HYDEN BLOG: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from Bellator 266 and UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Spann

By: Frank Hyden, MMATorch Senior Columnist

Bellator 266 and UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Spann was last night.
Let’s get to the rundown.

Bellator 266
GOOD- Ben Parrish stops Christian Edwards
Edwards came out firing but Parrish came back and dropped Edwards with
a big left hand. He followed up to force the referee to jump in to
stop the fight 38 seconds into the first round win. Good win for
Parrish.

GOOD/BAD- Saul Rogers vs. Georgi Karakhanyan
They traded shots before Rogers got a takedown and rode out the rest
of the first round. The second round started with another Rogers
takedown and did some damage but that was about it. Karakhanyan
finally got up and started unloading on Rogers, who got another
takedown to end the round. Rogers got another takedown to start the
third round and I felt like turning the channel. Karakhanyan has no
answer for Rogers’ wrestling and this is just dull to watch. No
surprise that Rogers the decision, good win for him. Rogers fought
smartly but this fight was largely a bore.

GOOD- DeAnna Bennett vs. Alejandra Lara
Lara started strongly by hurting Bennett. However, Bennett was able to
get a takedown and she started working some good ground-and-pound.
Lara’s gas tank seemed to empty in the second round but Bennett still
seemed fresh. They traded strikes throughout the second and into the
third round but Bennett started pulling away. Bennett won the
decision, good win for her.

GOOD- Neiman Gracie stops Mark Lemminger
Gracie hurt Lemminger with a big uppercut then followed that up with
big shot after big shot until the referee jumped in to stop the fight
not quite two minutes into the first round. Good win for Gracie and a
statement for those who think he can only grapple.

GOOD/BAD- Phil Davis vs. Yoel Romero
Not a lot going on in the first round, Davis landed a few nice punches
but that was it. Romero woke up in the second round but Davis still
got the better of it. It was really close but Davis got a takedown at
the end of the round that likely gave him the round. Davis got three
takedowns in the third round and he worked the body. Somehow, though,
one of the judges scored the fight for Romero. Whoever that was should
be removed from judging. I don’t get it, how do you say that Romero
won two of the rounds? I wouldn’t give him a single round, I think
Davis swept him. And I’ve heard some talk that Romero didn’t know it
was a three round fight, he thought it was five. Even if he did think
that, which would be ridiculous on his part, who cares? He lost the
first three rounds, what difference would it have made to have two
more rounds? And I’m glad this wasn’t a five round fight, it didn’t
need that many. We got a clear winner in three rounds. Good win for
Davis.

UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Spann
Joaquin Buckley stops Antonio Arroyo
They traded a lot of strikes in the first round, it was very close.
They trade more strikes in the second round but Buckley starts pulling
away with his output. Buckley turned it up even more in the third
round and stopped Arroyo almost halfway through the round. Good win
for Buckley.

GOOD- Nate Maness stops Tony Gravely
These guys threw a lot of strikes in the first round and traded
takedowns. Gravely almost stopped Maness at the end of the round but
he didn’t quite get it. Maness stopped Gravely in the second round
with a big right hand and some follow-up shots a little over two
minutes into the round. Good win for Maness.

GOOD- Arman Tsarukyan stops Christos Giagos
They went to the ground early but stood back up and Tsarukyan dropped
Giagos with a left hook. He swarmed and forced the referee to jump in
to stop the fight a little over two minutes into the first round. Good
win for Tsarukyan.

GOOD- Ariane Lipski vs. Mandy Bohm
Lipski did more throughout this fight, Bohm seemed very tentative.
Bohm showed good toughness to take the punishment Lipski was dishing
out. She got dropped a few times but kept coming. It wasn’t enough,
though, and Lipski won the decision.

GOOD- Ion Cutelaba vs. Devin Clark
Cutelaba took the fight to Clark in the first round, laying into him
with big strikes and good ground-and-pound. Cutelaba got on top in the
second round and mainly just sapped Clark’s energy. Cutelaba got
another trip in the third round. Cutelaba got the decision victory,
good win for him.

GOOD- Anthony Smith submits Ryan Spann
Smith dropped Spann with a right hook and then later hurt him with a
left hook. He then got him to the ground and locked in a tight
rear-naked choke to get the submission victory not quite four minutes
into the first round. Good win for Smith as he’s now won three fights
in a row and Spann has lost two of his last three fights. Good win for
Smith.

My book is on Amazon. It’s called Small Town Crime Cabal.
It’s about a brother and sister who operate a drug and gambling ring
in their small hometown. They want more, though, and hope to expand
beyond the limits of where they grew up. That comes with a price,
though, and the question becomes- are they willing to pay the price?
This is the first in my Brotherhood of the Streets series. It’s on
Kindle Unlimited right now or you can buy it in e-book or paperback
form. If you’re interested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would
check it out and support me.  Here’s the link to my book on Amazon- My Book Thank you very
much, have a good day.

My other book is also on Amazon. It’s called Forever Man: The
Fight to Save the World
. It’s a fiction book about a nearly
omnipotent alien who proclaims himself the ruler of Earth and the
struggles that follow. The book is part Sci-Fi, part Action Movie, and
part Drama.
