ROUNDTABLE: Staff predictions for Rory MacDonald vs. Jon Fitch

By Michael Hiscoe, Managing Editor

Who will win the Bellator 220 main event between Rory MacDonald and Jon Fitch?

Patrick Shaheen, Host – MMA Scope Podcast

Rory MacDonald does not like losing, it shows in all of his post-loss fights, and he’s coming off the worst loss of his career against Gegard Mousasi. MacDonald returns to his weight, a weight he might be the best in the world at. I’m not writing Fitch off here, I just don’t like his odds. It will be a very good fight and I don’t expect Jon Fitch to be intimidated by anyone. I see Rory getting a TKO in the later rounds, too much volume and I think he’ll avoid damage well after hard-learned lessons in his last fight.

I’m going with MacDonald by decision. I think he’ll be able to stop enough of Fitch’s takedown attempts that he’ll win the majority of the rounds. I also think he won’t take a lot of damage because that’s not really Fitch’s style so I think he’ll be fresher for longer and be able to stuff more takedowns as a result. I don’t think the fight will be all that exciting but I hope I’m wrong about that.

This fight is gonna be incredibly boring. It’s a Jon Fitch fight. It will go one of two ways. Either we see a MacDonald KO within a round or two, or a Fitch win by decision. Fitch will dive for the takedown quickly and will hold Macdonald down for the whole fight. So I guess I’m picking Fitch, but if you want to still have a love for MMA after this weekend, stay away from this fight.

I don’t pick against Rory MacDonald often and I certainly won’t do it in this case. I don’t think Jon Fitch has what it takes to stop Rory from doing whatever he wants. If anyone can give it the old college try it’s Jon Fitch but I am pretty sure Rory will control every aspect of this fight.

Could a roided up Jon Fitch beat a slightly broken Rory MacDonald? Probably, but I’m not banking on that happening. The only way Fitch can take this fight is if he’s just shot after too many damaging fights, such as his previous loss to Gegard Mousasi. Jon Fitch can be a tough guy to put away but I think MacDonald will get the submission win late in the fight, let’s say fourth round.
