ROUNDTABLE: Who is a more interesting fight for Conor McGregor, Donald Cerrone or Max Holloway?

By Michael Hiscoe, Managing Editor

Which fight would you prefer to see, Conor McGregor vs. Cowboy Cerrone or Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway? Which fight do you think would do better business?

Cole Henry, Host – MMA Scope Podcast

I think I would prefer to see McGregor vs. Cerrone. For some reason I want to see Cerrone get a big payday, and plus I just think it would make for a very exciting fight. As far as business goes, I think both fights would do about the same. They would do big business because McGregor is involved, and I don’t think either fighter matched up with him will lead to anymore or less buys.

Sean Covington, Columnist – Covington’s Corner

I prefer to see Conor McGregor vs Max Holloway because it will be a slugfest and I am not entirely sure Donald Cerrone would be able to absorb the damage Conor would deal out in such a short time because Cowboy gets off to slow starts. I’m not entirely sure Max would beat Conor the second time around but I would love to see him try. Max also deserves to get paid and a fight between him and McGregor is gonna make more money than McGregor vs Cerrone.

Frank Hyden, Columnist – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I would rather see McGregor vs. Holloway because I think that would be a tremendous fight. I think McGregor vs. Cerrone would be a great fight as well, but McGregor-Holloway 2 would be a huge fight. If McGregor were to win, he just beat one of the best fighters on the planet. If Holloway were to win, he just beat the biggest star in MMA. I know this isn’t Highlander where you absorb the popularity of those you beat, but this would catapult Holloway into another stratosphere. I would love to see either of these fights, but the fight with Holloway would do better business. For one, it’s for a championship. That’s an easy hook and you could sell a lot of tickets on that alone. However, there’s also the fact that McGregor beat Holloway years ago. That’s also an easy hook and you could get a lot of play from that. The Cerrone fight would do big business but the Holloway fight could do monster business.

Holloway vs McGregor. Listen, I like Cowboy, but this fight just seems like a MASSIVE stretch. Cerrone lost 4 of his last 5, then went on a two-fight winning streak against an unranked welterweight and a low ranked, inexperienced lightweight. Conor would kill him. Holloway is the better fight, as it doesn’t even need to be for a belt and could easily main event a pay per view. A rematch in the guy on a massive winning streak vs the Lightweight division’s #2 contender. It makes a terrific match, that gives the winner a shot at the winner of Khabib and Tony.

I’ve hinted many times to fellow MMATorch contributor David McGrath about a rematch between McGregor and Holloway. I would love to see this fight at 155 but wouldn’t be against it at 145. At featherweight, we would then have the definitive answer to who’s the best ever at that weight.

Michael Grocke, MMATorch Fight Handicapper

A Holloway/McGregor fight would get my money faster than Cerrone/McGregor. While both fights would be entertaining, Holloway vs. McGregor is a better story. I would also prefer the fight take place at 145 to determine which fighter is the best featherweight in the world. However, my mind is already set as to whom I think is the best featherweight in the world, and I would relish the opportunity to make a nice sized, “Blessed” wager on the fight.

For me it’s easy, and that is I want to see a Conor McGregor-Donald Cerrone matchup much more than I would a McGregor-Max Holloway fight. The dynamic between working-class hero Cerrone, and the brash, arrogant, and wealthy McGregor is what money fights are made of. It’s also the kind of fight McGregor needs right now. He shouldn’t be facing one of the killers in the division such as Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson. McGregor needs a fight he has a good chance of winning. A fight with Cerrone strikes the best balance between a winnable fight with a credible opponent who isn’t going to be a ‘gimme’ for McGregor.

McGregor-Holloway does more for Max Holloway right now than it does for McGregor and UFC is still in the Conor McGregor business right now. There may come a time when a rematch makes sense, but it’s not right now. I think the Cerrone fight is an easier sell and it gives McGregor a better chance at getting a win.
