On a night that seemed like nearly everything went right, UFC 229 ended on a sour note. Seconds after submitting Conor McGregor in the fourth round the retain his lightweight championship, Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped over the cage and went after one of McGregor’s cornermen, Dillon Danis. If that wasn’t enough, a member of Nurmagomedov’s corner entered the cage and went after McGregor, who was standing in the cage recovering from the choke. Security did their best to calm things. Nurmagomedov’s teammates Luke Rockhold and Daniel Cormier came to the cage to help calm Nurmagomedov.
McGregor was escorted to the back. Dana White could be heard saying to Nurmagomedov, “If I put this belt on you, everyone’s going to start throwing s— in this octagon.’
Nurmagomedov was then escorted from the cage. No official announcement was made, and sure enough fans threw bottles at Khabib as he left.
Once Nurmagomedov was out of the cage. Bruce Buffer red the decision in solitude.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is still the UFC lightweight champion but don’t expect to see him for a while.
Dana White wouldn’t put the belt on the champ in the ring because it could spark off a riot. The announcers talked about how there was a lot of Irish and Russian fans in Las Vegas, all liquored up, and this ending…I don’t envy the Police.
