Gilbert Melendez is staying in good spirits after his loss to Edson Barboza on Saturday night, posting an after-fight picture with his team to Instagram on Sunday with an encouraging caption.
After a seven fight winning streak to close out his run in Strikeforce, Melendez has just one win in five UFC appearances, and has now lost three straight.
Penick’s Analysis: Melendez has fallen significantly from where he was just four years ago. He’s done as a title contender after two title losses, a failed drug test, and three straight losses overall. He needs to win a fight, against anyone at this point. He’s still a talented and well rounded competitor, and is going to beat a lot of fighters out of the top ten, but he’s a step behind where he was in recent years. He needs a bounce back in his next outing, and without that his time in the UFC may come to an end.
