Matt Mitrione took some serious damage to his right eye on Sunday night, with his eye blowing up after he suffered a broken orbital bone in the loss to Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81. The damage was done after two nasty eye pokes, and he also suffered a bad shoulder injury in the process of the loss.
He updated his status after the event, and posted a follow up picture Monday morning that show things didn’t improve much overnight.
Broken orbital floor. This and the shoulder happened after the 2nd eye poke. I don’t think they would’ve happened pic.twitter.com/wFn1NC3j5Y

Penick’s Analysis: The inability for Mitrione to see clearly absolutely left him vulnerable to the strike that broke his face, and to what happened with his shoulder. And it’s something that’s going to continue to happen in fight after fight when eye pokes continue to be treated as “accidental.” It’s been said time and again, but continues to bear repeating: unless eye pokes receive significant punishment consistently, then fighters are going to continue keeping their fingers extended to gain an edge.
