Dana White says too early to book Robbie Lawler-Carlos Condit rematch after UFC 195, but they’ll “see what happens”

The epic fight between Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit on Saturday at UFC 195 is as worthy of an immediate rematch as any other title fight, especially given the very large segment of fans and pundits who believe Condit should have been given the decision.

So will it happen?

Well, that depends on a few factors, and UFC President Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that it’s a conversation they’ll have at a later date.

“Carlos was saying in the back that he might retire,” White said (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). “This might be the last fight for Carlos. We’ll see how this thing plays out. You can’t make these types of fights right after the [first] fight.

“Lawler said yes, and he’d like to do it. I’m sure Condit would like do it again if he doesn’t decide to retire. I respect both guys a lot. We’ll see how this thing plays out, and we’ll see what happens.”

Penick’s Analysis: Obviously several of the other title rematches being booked are because the champion lost their title, and that’s really what the situation should be here. If Condit had been given the nod on Saturday night, there wouldn’t have been any hesitation whatsoever in booking the rematch for Lawler, but the fact that Condit was not given that decision unfortunately could work against him. Still, if ever there was a fight to run again, this is it; that fight belongs at least in the conversation for greatest title fights in UFC history. It was legitimately that good, and it’s one to run again to see what the two of them could do with five more rounds. Now, if that’s not going to be in their plans, I can see Condit sadly walking away, but if he has it in him to go to war against Lawler once more, the UFC should be making that fight.
