Frankie Edgar is the No. 1 contender in the UFC featherweight division.

He left no question about that fact on Friday night, knocking Chad Mendes out in the first round in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale.

Mendes actually started off fairly well, battering Edgar’s leg with kicks and landing a few combinations, but Edgar caught him with a perfect two punch combo to the jaw and across the nose to put him on the ground. A follow up hammer fist put the lights out briefly on the ground, and the ref stepped in.

For Edgar, it was one of his most decisive career wins, and came in as big a spot as he’s seen since he dropped a decision to Jose Aldo in his featherweight debut. He now awaits the main event of UFC 194, as a win for Aldo over Conor McGregor is likely to finally set up that rematch. At this point, it’s long overdue.
