UFC 193 Fallout: Champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk suffers broken hand, to undergo surgery in LA

By Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has suffered another break to her right hand, and will be undergoing surgery in Los Angeles in the next few weeks, according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Jedrzejczyk injured the hand in the midst of her successful title defense over Valerie Letourneau at UFC 193 on Saturday night, with her manager Tiago Okamura saying the break was in a different spot than the one she suffered to the hand over the summer. That came in her successful defense over Jessica Penne at UFC Fight Night 69 in Germany.

The 28-year-old is 11-0 overall in her MMA career, and has now won five straight inside the Octagon. She’s expected to meet Claudia Gadelha in her next title defense, though this hand surgery could delay that bout significantly. We’ll get a better idea of her return timetable after that surgery.

Penick’s Analysis: Well that’s unfortunate news, but not entirely surprising. She throws so many strikes throughout her fights that injuries are bound to happen. She hits hard, and occasionally those hits connect in ways that cause hand injuries. It’s common enough. Hopefully the surgery doesn’t keep her sidelined for too long, and given how quickly she was able to bounce back from the last one, we should still see her against Gadelha soon enough.
