UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Font was this past weekend and featured
a few interesting fights. Also, I’ll touch on the Jake Paul vs. Nate
Diaz boxing match from Saturday as well. Who won and who lost? Let’s
get to the rundown.
UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Font
GOOD- Ignacio Bahamondes vs. Ludovit Klein
They’re trading kicks early before mixing in some knees and punches.
They go to the ground and Klein is fighting on top. Bahamondes tries
for a few submissions but Klein cuts him open with some
ground-and-pound. Bahamondes stands up and they trade some strikes
before the first round ends. The second round begins with some nice
exchanges before Klein gets a takedown. Bahamondes is quickly back up
and they go back to striking before Klein gets another takedown and
the second round ends. The third round starts with Bahamondes trying
for a few takedowns but he can’t complete them. Klein continues
striking until getting a takedown of his own. The third round ends so
we go to the judges for the decision. Klein wins the decision to
improve to 20-4-1 while Bahamondes drops to 14-5 and has his 3 fight
winning streak snapped. Good win for Klein.
GOOD- Tanner Boser vs. Aleksa Camur
They exchange early, fighting on the fence a few times, Boser using
his jab a lot before the first round ends. The second round begins
with Boser having success and opening up with his hands. They fight on
the fence for a while before separating, Boser continuing to fire away
and the second round ends. The third round starts with both men
landing some heavy strikes. Boser’s getting the better of it with some
huge punches but Camur absorbs them and throws some back in return.
The third round ends so we go to the judges for the decision. Boser
wins the decision to improve to 21-10-1 while Camur drops to 6-3 and
has lost 3 straight fights. Good win for Boser.
GOOD- Diego Lopes submits Gavin Tucker
Tucker gets a quick takedown but Lopes immediately begins trying to
lock in a submission. He tries a few different ones before grabbing a
triangle armbar and Tucker has to tap a little over a minute and a
half into the first round. Tucker’s arm got torqued with that armbar
so I hope he didn’t get injured. Just as an interesting tidbit,
neither man landed a strike in this fight. Not that Lopes needed to.
Lopes improves to 22-6 while Tucker drops to 13-3. Good win for Lopes.
GOOD- Dustin Jacoby stops Kennedy Nzechukwu
They’re exchanging punches early until Jacoby crushes Nzechukwu with a
massive counter right that drops him. Jacoby pounces and the referee
jumps in to stop the fight almost a minute and a half into the first
round. Nzechukwu protested the stoppage and it was a little early but
I think it was fine. Jacoby improves to 19-7-1 while Nzechukwu drops
to 12-4 and has his 3 fight winning streak snapped. Good win for
Jacoby.
GOOD- Tatiana Suarez submits Jessica Andrade
They’re wading through water early, not doing much, until Suarez gets
a takedown. Andrade stands and they exchange for a bit before the
first round ends. The second round begins with Suarez getting an early
takedown and going to work. She locks in a guillotine and Andrade has
to tap a minute and a half into the second round. Suarez improves to a
perfect 10-0 while Andrade drops to 24-12 and has lost 3 straight
fights. Good win for Suarez.
BAD/GOOD- Cory Sandhagen vs. Rob Font
Sandhagen’s original opponent Umar Nurmagomedov had to pull out so
this fight was at 140 lbs. catchweight. Sandhagen gets a takedown
early as Font tries for a guillotine before they stand up. Sandhagen
gets another takedown and eventually Font is able to get back up
before the first round ends. The second round begins with Sandhagen
getting another takedown and they spend the rest of the round tied up
and Sandhagen is glued to Font. The third round starts with Sandhagen
getting another takedown after a few strikes and he continues to hug
him. Font eventually gets free and stands but the third round ends.
The fourth round opens with more of the same, as Sandhagen gets
another takedown. Again, he can’t do anything and I wish this fight
was over. Font stands but Sandhagen takes him right back down before
the fourth round ends. Yay. The fifth round sees Font go for a
takedown of his own for some ungodly reason. Sandhagen reverses and
gets the takedown himself. Sandhagen tries for a submission but can’t
get it so we go to the judges for the decision. Sandhagen wins and
improves to 17-4 and has won 3 straight fights while Font drops to
20-7. I know it was short notice and a win’s a win but this fight
sucked. Luckily it’ll get memory-holed pretty quick but this was just
so dull. Anyway, enough complaining about it. Good win for Sandhagen.
*************
Jake Paul beat Nate Diaz in their boxing match last Saturday. Or
Sunday morning, depending on where you live. Anyway, it was a clear
decision victory for Paul with scores of 97-92, 98-91, and 98-91. Paul
hurt Diaz early in the 1st round and Nate looked rocked for a while
but he survived. The fight continued and Paul knocked Diaz down in the
5th round but he got back up. Diaz looked very out of his element here
but his trademark toughness was on display.
It’s a nice win for Jake, if expected. He bounced back from his first
loss and said after the fight that he’d rematch Nate in MMA next time.
We’ll see if that comes to fruition.
My new fantasy book is out. It’s called Kingdom of Zarias: A Fight For
Survival. It’s the third book in my epic fantasy Kingdom of Zarias
series and follows the adventures of the Summers siblings as they
fight to defend the world from an evil villain named Galren. This book
also introduces lots of other characters as the scope of the world
grows. There’s lots of action, magic, and monsters in the Kingdom of
Zarias. It’s like a tabletop game in novel form. It’s on Amazon,
Barnes & Noble, and many other places. If you’re interested, I would
greatly appreciate it if you would check it out and support me. Also,
here’s the link to my new Compendium book about the Kingdom of Zarias
series- KoZ Compendium
