UFC 229 will be a lightweight extravaganza.
As first reported by mmajunkie, the UFC is will book former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson against former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Ferguson has been inactive since pulling out of a presumed title defense against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. The injury that forced Ferguson to be stripped of his interim title was a result of a tripping accident in the FS1 studio, as part of promotion for UFC 223.
Pettis also had his original UFC 223 plans changed, when scheduled opponent Michael Chiesa was injured by Conor McGregor’s assault on a bus caring several fighters. At UFC 226 Pettis defeated Chiesa in a rescheduled bout.
On that fateful day of the bus attack, Mcgregor’s primary target was current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. At UFC 229 Ferguson and Pettis will serve as undercard action to the highly anticipated McGregor-Nurmagomedov championship showdown.
Since the reports began circulating, both fighters took to social media to seeming inly confirm the fight.
