Daniel Cormier responds to the Jon Jones USADA violation
The man who was directly affected by Jon Jones’s potential PED use has spoken. Daniel Cormier, who was defeated for the UFC light heavyweight title by Jones at UFC 214, put out a statement Tuesday night in response to Jones being notified of a potential failed drug test.
Cormier told mmafighting.com:
“It’s hard to find words to describe how I’m feeling right now; I’m disappointed to hear the news. It’s very emotional. We as athletes are entitled to due process, and I will refrain from saying much more until I know exactly what happened. In my mind, on July 29, I competed and I lost. I thought Jon Jones was the better man that day. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t believe we are going through all of this again. We will see what happens next. Thank you to all my fans who have supported me during this dark time. I love you all very much.”
Prior to UFC 214, Cormier was critical of Jones’s history with PED’s, claiming that Jones had not been the same fighter since USADA begun regulating the UFC.
However, in the aftermath of Jones’s decisive victory at UFC 214, Cormier has conceded that Jones has the clear upper-hand in their long-standing rivalry.
Ironically, in recent weeks Cormier has indicated that he believes that he will fight Jones again someday. As it stands, Jones is 2-0 against Cormier. In the likely scenario that Jones is forced to vacate the light heavyweight title, Cormier would likely find himself in contention to once again hold the belt in a Jones-less UFC.
