UFC Fight Night 9/5/2020 Review

Surprise, Surprise

Ovince Saint-Preux vs. Alonso Merifield

Light Heavyweight

This Fight was a brawl like we expected it to be.  Merifield might be the most underrated guy entering this fight.  No one was talking about him going into this fight, as we were all waiting for another fantastic moment from OSP.  We weren’t disappointed.  Merifield actually seemed to get the better of most exchanges, and OSP seemed to be lacking energy.  Turns out that wasn’t the case at all.  OSP throws a perfect counter left hook on Merifield and knocks him out.  He didn’t knock him down and follow up with big shots, he knocked him out, cold, with one shot.  Always nice to see a fight that might lead to some not so exciting stand up get a shock finish like this.

Rating: 8/10

Result: 2nd Round KO for Ovince Saint-Preux

Protect Ya Neck

Brian Kelleher vs. Ray Rodriguez

Featherweight

This fight only took 39 seconds.  Kelleher ended things with a guillotine choke.  Ray Rodriguez went straight in for a takedown on Kelleher, which everyone who has ever fought him knows you shouldn’t do.  In Rodriguez’s defense he took this fight on very short notice, and was actually Kelleher’s 3rd potential opponent on this card.  It was pretty obvious that Rodriguez didn’t study up on Kelleher before they got in the octagon.  Kelleher was extremely respectful and thankful for the opportunity to fight from Rodriguez.

Rating: 9/10

Result: 1st Round Submission (Guillotine Choke) for Brian Kelleher

Everything Must Go

Michel Pereira vs. Zelim Imadaev

Welterweight

This fight was so much fun to watch.  Pereira has a bright future if he can have a performance like this once every 4 fights.  He was dancing around Imadaev, going to the extent of egging him on and putting his hands behind his back.  They almost got into a real brawl at the end of the first round, as a fierce look and words were exchanged.  Pereira completely dominated every round, mixing in great striking with a bit of solid wrestling.  The fight ended with Pereira hitting a suplex on Imadaev and getting him into a rear naked choke.  The ref called for a stoppage, although there was a bit on controversy if Imadaev actually tapped out.  GO WATCH THIS FIGHT.  If Welterweight needs a new face, Michel Pereira could easily be that man, as he called out Masvidal multiple times after the fight.

Main Event

Aleister Overeem vs. Augusto Sakai

Heavyweight

The main event is not in my Top 3 for the night, but I can’t leave it out.  This fight probably should have ended after 4 rounds.  Sakai barely looked conscious, but he wanted to finish out like all these crazy bastards do.  Overeem got a quick takedown and used some ground and pound to get a TKO early in the 5th.  There was a lot of sizing up in this fight, as both men seemed to chip away at each other instead of go for the knockout. Good fight, maybe Overeem will get one more shot at Heavyweight gold before he has to hang up the gloves.

Rating: 8/10

Result: 5th Round TKO for Aleister Overeem
