Max Holloway retains UFC featherweight championship via doctor’s stoppage in excellent UFC 231 main event

After a tease during the summer, Max Holloway and Brian Ortega finally got it on on Saturday night. In the UFC 231 main event

The first round saw both men land some heavy shots but with Holloway landing in greater volume. Holloway taunted Ortega throughout the round, goading him to engage in a slugfest.

The second round saw Holloway start to pull away. He was able to bloody up Ortega with punches. Ortega still pressed forward but Holloway maintained control of the fight.

The third round started very much the same until a minute in when Ortega rocked Holloway hard with a punch. He tried to follow up with a takedown but Holloway was able to free himself. Holloway was able to recover while Ortega worked to get him to the mat.

Holloway unloaded on Ortega in round four, putting on immense pressure that Ortega had trouble responding to as he fatigued. Ortega tried for takedowns but Holloway just lit him up and ran away with this round.

Between rounds, the doctor cageside doctor deemed that Ortega was unable to continue due to swelling under his left eye and Holloway won the fight via TKO. Holloway exited the cage, not to start a fight, but to celebrate with his family. Holloway then delivered a post-fight promo like only he could.
