ROUNDTABLE: Do the acquisitions of Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious Johnson, and Miesha Tate make ONE more relevant?

Do you have any more interest in watching ONE Championship shows with the recent acquisitions of Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious Johnson to the roster and Miesha Tate as an executive?

I think everybody should be watching ONE. I mean, you can watch it free on their app, so it’s at very least worth checking out.

I have more interest now but that’s because I didn’t really have much interest before. It’s cool to think about Johnson and Alvarez fighting for the company and I think Tate adds to the company as an executive. However, a big TV deal here in the U.S. would really help build interest. As it is, they’re interesting and can definitely deliver big fights but I would put them in third with all the other organizations, right behind the UFC and Bellator. I would put ONE Championship at the head of that third group. Short answer- yes, I have more interest because they have guys who are legitimately among the best fighters in the world. Johnson and Alvarez are former UFC champions, their resumes speak for themselves. They both add to my interest in ONE Championship.

It definitely helps. Bringing in top flight fighters like Johnson and Alvarez will at least bring some avid UFC fans in to watch the shows that they are on. The tournaments will give fans something to follow and come back for whether Johnson and Alvarez win or lose in their first fights. If ONE is able to have a presentation and flow to their shows that makes them easily consumable, that may encourage North American fans to stick around for shows without the new acquisitions as well. What I’ve seen from ONE thus far is typical MMA, with long cards with a lot of fights. Right now, ONE is a small screen “lean in” type of property so a more efficient (read: short) show might be to their benefit. We’ll wait and see what Miesha Tate brings to the table. She’s a recognizable name and is highly likable, so that can help the promotion get some media attention stateside.
