What are your thoughts on the Floyd Mayweather/RIZIN announcement?

Editor’s Note: Covington’s response was written before Floyd Mayweather claimed the fight wasn’t happening.

Sean Covington, Columnist – Covington’s Corner

I make absolutely nothing of it, nothing is finalized and Floyd Mayweather loves to talk. Mayweather has a disease or contract where he has to say he’s fighting someone random every month; Floyd wants to fight everybody.

Frank Hyden, Columnist – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

As I write this, the fight is off, so I’ll chalk the whole thing up to a fever dream Mayweather apparently had before having someone talk some sense into him. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose here. I’m sure he would have been paid well but this fight made zero sense from the time it was announced. I know he wants to keep his name in the news but there’s better ways than this stuff.

Floyd always has a plan. I don’t buy his story that he was going to take part in some sort of weird exhibition for wealthy Japanese businessmen. I think that negotiations for the rules of the fight were not going well and this is Mayweather either bowing out or trying to force their hand. We can’t forget that RIZIN is run by Nobuyuki Sakakibara, who used to run PRIDE. PRIDE was notorious for playing games with foreigners to set them up to lose to local favorites. Mike Tyson was used as a dangling carrot many times for PRIDE fighters. The only difference is that Tyson never showed up. I think that if this fight does happen, it’ll be a straight boxing match and if Floyd doesn’t embarrass himself, he’ll be back fighting in the U.S. later in 2019.
