Conor McGregor’s loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 on Saturday night was overshadowed by the events that followed immediately after the fight. But that doesn’t mean that McGregor himself isn’t focused on the result and what may come next.

In a Monday Instagram post, McGregor shared a photo of himself holding a glass of his Proper No. Twelve Whiskey (always the promoter, he was sure to tag the brand’s page) and looking intently through the camera’s lens.

“We lost the match but won the battle,” the caption read. “The war goes on.”

What’s next for McGregor remains to be seen. A rematch with Nurmagomedov would be massive. Unfortunately, the Russian’s fate currently lies in the hands of the Nevada Athletic Commission. Alternatively, McGregor always has a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz in his back pocket. With McGregor coming off a loss, there is less pressure and need for Diaz to win over Dustin Poirier at UFC 230 next month to set up the fight.

It is interesting that McGregor claims “we won the battle.” First because he uses the collective “we” – potentially referring to he and his corner men. Then secondly because he claims they “won” – likely referring to for once being on the right side of the public relations battle.

McGregor is absolutely right when he says this isn’t over.

  1. The outcome of Mcgregor vs Khabib fight is embarassing really. It could be one of the greatest fight in MMA history but was only ruined by purely not controlled emotion. I wonder why it happened given the fact that they are already in this business for a long time. Maybe they forgot what sport means. Those people whoe are responsible on the brawl should be banned for good from the UFC.
