UFC 217: Covington’s predictions for the Bisping vs. St-Pierre headlined main card

BY SEAN COVINGTON, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

Main Card

Paulo Costa vs Johny Hendricks

Hendricks will be saying his goodbyes after this defeat or at least he should be. Hendricks lost the passion to fight and when you don’t love what you do it’s going to show. I think Hedricks will look good for about 3 minutes then Costa will control the fight from that point on.

Jorge Masvidal vs Stephen Thompson

Wonderboy looked really vulnerable against Woodley. If Masvidal gets that rough with him then he could KO him; but Woodley couldn’t. That said, Masvidal is no more than a gate keeper and Thompson should get past him easily enough. A lackluster fight with a unanimous decision for Thompson is what we’re probably going to see.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Rose Namajunas (Strawweight Championship)

Should be a walk in the park for JJ, but even walks in the park can end badly. A unanimous decision should be the result of this championship fight in favor of the champion. However, there is a chance Rose comes out with a sense of fire, pride, urgency, etc. and take this fight to JJ. If Joanna takes Rose lightly we could see the upset of the year. Rose should get TKOed by the 3rd round but I think JJ will drag this out until the end.

Cody Garbrandt vs TJ Dillashaw (Bantamweight Championship)

Dillashaw might get knocked out if he over pursues, and judging by his fight with Cruz that’s exactly what he’ll do. Cody already has TJ’s number because TJ is a Cruz knockoff. TJ likes to come forward a lot more though which could either force Cody to out of his comfort zone and ruin his game plan or get him knocked out. Either way this fight is Garbrandt’s to lose. I think Dillashaw is going to get knocked out in the early second round, two minutes in.

Michael Bisping vs Georges St-Pierre (Middleweight Championship)

I have Bisping all the way in this one. I think that fighting Anderson Silva and Luke Rockhold has prepared Bisping enough to face a ring-rusted GSP. If GSP had a couple of warm-up fights then I would pick him without hesitating. The outcome of this fight doesn’t matter one bit because the winner of this fight will be torn apart by whomever they face next. Romero, Woodley, etc. every name floated out there will utterly destroy Bisping or GSP. This fight will be boring as all hell. Trust me when I say that it will be a major let down with both guys going through the motions the entire time. Bisping with a split, slightly controversial decision.

This card is stacked but I absolutely think that it will be a major disappointment. Entirely too much hype.
