MAYWEATHER VS. MCGREGOR PPV UNDERCARD REPORT
AUGUST 26, 2017
T-MOBILE ARENA IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

(1) Andrew Tabiti vs. Steve Cunningham – Cruiserweight 200 lbs.

Result: Andrew Tabiti over Steve Cunningham by Unanimous Decision

Monson’s Analysis: Not a very eventful opener. The left jab and right hand really worked well  for Tabiti throughout the bout and Tabiti’s youthful speed was simply unbeatable for Cunningham. Tabiti drove the fight for its entirety and should have been dinged for a shot after the bell in round 8. Outside of that blemish, Tabiti fought a perfect fight, came out relatively unscathed, and looked dominant over the older Cunningham.

(2) Badou Jack vs. Nathan Cleverly – Light Heavyweight 175 lbs.

Result: Badou Jack over Nathan Cleverly by TKO (2:47 of Round 5)

Monson’s Analysis: This fight was action packed and all Badou Jack. Jack was calm, cool, and collected throughout the fight and changed up the rhythm of his offense throughout each round. Cleverly never got rolling and his punches were ineffective on all fronts. Jack did most of his damage in the 4th round with stiff right hands and uppercuts. The finish came in round 5 when the referee stopped the fight after a barrage of punches to Cleverly while on the ropes. Tonight was Jack’s night through and through and deserves to be champion after a flawless victory.

(3) Gervonta Davis vs. Francisco Fonseca – Junior Lightweight 130 lbs.

Davis was stripped of the IBF Junior Lightweight Championship due to not making weight. Fonseca can win the title with a victory, Davis cannot.

Result: Gervonta Davis over Francisco Fonseca by TKO (0:39 of Round 8)

IBF Junior Lightweight Championship now vacated due to Davis missing weight for this fight

Monson’s Analysis: This fight had decent action throughout, but I had the feeling that Davis could finish it whenever he deemed necessary. Davis toying with Fonseca appeared to give Fonseca confidence and not the other way around. The fight ended with controversy as Davis hit Fonseca with a clearly illegal shot to the back of the head. It didn’t appear that the shot hurt Fonseca but he did not answer the ten count after it. Not sure what to make of the outcome, but the fight was definitively Davis’s regardless of the TKO.
